For hikers in Santa Fe, the trail to Atalaya Peak is the benchmark that measures fitness for the many more strenuous hikes in the area. A good way to know if you're in condition for more difficult hikes is if you can go up and down Atalaya (from the upper parking lot to the top, not the saddle) in 2 hours or less on a clear day. So, Atalaya is a great way to check your physical condition and go on to the more challenging hikes. As with all hikes, be prepared for changing weather conditions, take extra layers, water, snacks, a first aid kit and a compass or GPS. Have...

This is a great entry spot for the trail systems in and around Atalaya, only downside is that only about half of the dogs that you run into here are going to be on a leash, and dog owners are not very good at picking up poop. Lots of little doggy bags left on the trail, presumably to be picked up later, but all of the rest of us have to deal with that period Santa Fe dog owners are not very considerate when it comes to our trail system...

Good easy or challenging hike... two paths to the top. Recommend the steep one for those who can manage stairs. Great view. But the sf mouthing up Hyde park are better. This trail is great. Starting from St johns college parking lot, there's always a place to park. The first part of the trail is pretty and winds through arroyos. Then you start to climb. Some good views pretty early on. Can be crowded but everyone wears their masks.

We went on Mont Luna trail which splits off from the main Atalaya trail. Mont Luna is a mediocre level difficulty due to the end being mostly vertical. It provides great views and you may see some wildlife as well. We saw a roadrunner and a desert cottontail.
