A free range childhood looks like… Letting kids choose their own boundaries, Letting them learn how to make their own choices. Being there to catch them if they fall. One of the best parenting choices I ever made was to step back and let my kids be their own guide. They’ve learned what their body can and can’t do and gained a confidence I never could have given them. The best gift you can give your child is the ability to make healthy choices. It will help them into adulthood far more than anything they’ll learn in a book. 📍 Want to check out this epic playground yourself? You’ll find it at the top of My Washington, NH, the highest peak in northeastern US ———————————————————————————— We Chose Adventures is an outdoor loving family that downsized to prioritize an outdoor lifestyle. We spend our days road tripping and wild-schooling, sharing our best travel and outdoor tips along the way. Find out more here 👉 @WeChoseAdventures ————————————————————————————

𝙀𝙥𝙞𝙘 𝙉𝙔- 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙍𝙤𝙖𝙙 𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙥! Craving stunning views, mountain air, awesome hikes? The North East US has got it all! Here’s our suggestions for seriously gorgeous road trip. (#AD) Gear up with your @LLBean gear (it IS a New England staple!) and head out on one of the most beautiful road trips we’ve been on. Think flannels in fall foliage, cozy sweaters in on the ski slopes, and epic summer camping, New England is pretty amazing year round. 📍 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙨𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙈𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨, 𝙉𝙔- favorite hikes include Huckleberry Point, Kaaterskill Falls, Inspiration Point and Minnewaska State park. 📍 𝘼𝙙𝙞𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙈𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨, 𝙉𝙔- The largest park in the continental US! Be sure to check out Mt Van Hoevenburg (great hikes AND an Olympic training facility), Whiteface Mountain, Big Crow Trail, and Cobble Lookout trail. 📍 𝙒𝙝𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨, 𝙉𝙃- Home to the highest peak in the North Eastern US, Mt Washington is a must see. Drive the thrilling auto road or challenge yourself to hike the summit, its gorgeous either way! Also check out Mt Willard (cover photo), Artists Bluff, and the Black Cap trail. 📍 𝘼𝙘𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙖 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙠, 𝙈𝙀- The highest view on the East Coast, beautiful forests, and cliffside oceans, oh my! Favorite spots include Cadillac Mountain (you’ll need a reservation to drive up to this iconic view or you can hike your way in), Beech Mountain Trail, Thunder hole, and the many overlooks along Ocean Path. TIP: Parking here is extremely limited, ride the free LLBean bus instead (pets allowed too!). And of course if you want the full New England experience try the fresh lobster (or lobster roll!) and plan a visit to the LLBean flagship store and the Beanmobile in Freeport, ME. We were all like kids in a candy store, if candy was cool outdoor gear and cozy flannels and bean boots. Have you visited upstate New York and New England? If not yet then it’s time to plan a trip, save this for later! @LLBean #LLBeanPartner #beanoutsider

We got there mid-morning, and that particular day, it was perfect timing. We drove our car to the top (expensive, but worth it, for the views --- and the photo ops!) The drive is NOT for the squeamish, but not too bad, really. If you don't know where your passenger-side tires touch the road, then do not drive... Please. 😆 We arrived at the top, and were treated to a wonderful view... and then the clouds enveloped us! 😳 Yes, you could actually lick a cloud 😁 Bring cold-weather gear, i.e., jacket, long pants, windbreaker, REAL shoes (not sandals)... even gloves would be nice. Trust me! 😉 On September 25th, the weather at the bottom was 68 degrees, and calm. Up top, 30 degrees; winds 38mph, gusting to 50+; visibility was 80+ miles. Luckily we had 45 minutes of great weather, before the clouds just happened to appear from nowhere. Very unpredictable. The air is thinner above this 6,000+ ft level, so be careful if you have breathing issues. You will also need to walk a bit, and "climb" a tiny bit, if you want to reach the summit point sign (this is where sensible shoes come into play). If you have an unopened bag of chips in your car, look at it when you're in that upper altitude -- it's worth buying a bag down below. (Unopened Cheetos? Are you kidding me? 😁) All-in-all, it's worth every penny spent. (Sorry for the lack of nice photos -- they're in my real camera 😊)

A 60-acre parcel perched on the summit of the Northeast's highest peak is surrounded by the extensive 750,000-acre White Mountain National Forest. On a clear day, views from the 6,288-foot summit extend beyond New Hampshire as far as 130 miles to Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Quebec, and the Atlantic Ocean. The Visitor Center at the top of Mount Washington is open daily, during the summer/fall, Sadly The Tip Top House is closed now. The Sherman Adams building, houses The Sherman Adams Visitor Center, a cafeteria, restrooms, gift shops, the Mount Washington Observatory and its museum. Mount Washington is the central, highest summit of an alpine mountain massif called the Presidential Range where many peaks are named after former U.S. presidents. Other high peaks -- Mounts Clay, Jefferson, Adams, and Madison. Mount Washington has earned the title of "Home to the Worst Weather in the World". in 1934 the Mount Washington Observatory recorded a wind speed of 231 mph - the world record for most of the 20th century and still the record for a measured speed, not produced by a tropical cyclone. parking: ample parking there if you reach early ;) Fee: Car+driver- $ 45 (Oct-2022) Extra person: $20 PP children- $9 PP

Hiked up Tuckermans Ravine trail with 2 adults and 3 kids aged 12, 10 and 8. Be prepared for lots of rock scrambling/bouldering. It took us almost 5 hrs. There are a few steep bits to watch the kids on. I would strongly recommend hiking poles to help with balance over the rocks. Wear good shoes, bring snacks and lots of water. Be prepared for bad weather at the top. Check the weather at the visitor centre before heading up. There are bathrooms about 1/2 way up at Hermit Lake shelter. After you hit that the trails get much steeper. It's a mountain...be prepared. At the top you can chose to hike back down or take a shuttle van back down the auto road (cost us $100US for 5 of us). It was well worth it! Lol. Get ready for sore legs the next day! The visitor centre has a museum at the bottom of it. You can drive up the auto road...for a family of 5 it cost $61 US. It was worth it! Really steep but on a clear day the best views! Kind of freaky when you are close to the edge of the road. When we got to the top that day the winds were 110km/hr and it was foggy. We needed to use the pull offs on the way down to cool our trucks breaks. Only cars and trucks allowed up, no busses, trailers or motorhomes.
