What a gem! My only complaint is how far I have to drive from the Woodward corridor to reach the metropark. Sometimes I feel I spend as long in traffic as I do strolling along this magnificent stretch of placid, dreamy riverfront fringed in leafy splendour.
Dexter-Huron metropark may be the best paddling around, especially for canoes, kayaks, and inflatable doughnut-rings tied to a boat. You'll see plenty of the above during the summer, with people gleefully throwing in their favourite watercraft along the rocky banks and receiving friendly waves from pedestrians and cyclists on the paved paths and bridges. The water route is absolutely the one to take if you can. Kayaking involves some beautiful views of mixed forests, old railway bridges, rapids splashing under car bridges, and quiet backwaters shaded by maples and birches. In the autumn, the views are majestic. Several places along the river cater to watercraft, and I've seen plenty of picnic sites.
The bike trail is outstanding, paved and MOSTLY with respectful riders. For sake of pedestrians, use your bell or call out "On your left/right" to notify the amblers where you are. Lots of traffic on two wheels and equal amounts on two feet or four-wheeled strollers means expect to share the lovely boardwalk Border-to-Border path. Some cyclists seem to ride hell-for-leather and forget that not everyone knows they're coming...
Read moreExcellent park, especially if you want access to the Huron River. Frequently used it as a kayaking launch point! Will likely stop entirely if if the following continues.
Dropping off a kayak was a whopping $10.00 fee, even when I explained I don’t need a vehicle permit, as I previously arranged to park elsewhere. Being charged $10 each time I want to drop off my Kayak is infuriating, basically.
Pre-2019, I never had a problem. If I told the attendant at the park that I was dropping off a kayak, but parking elsewhere, they always waved me through - no charge, because I’m not parking there, so I don’t need a vehicle permit!
It’s not like I get snacks or something for “entry” - I’m being gouged $10 every time I want to kayak, whether or not I park there. This only will encourage me to enter the river elsewhere - and...
Read moreFriends took us to the boardwalk after dinner in downtown Dexter. What a nice surprise! Beautiful, clean boardwalk. Many flowers and landscaping, benches in little brickpaver areas. Sculptures in various locations. The walk way is on both sides of Main Street with part of it running under Mainstreet, eleminating worry when walking with small kids or pets. Immaculately maintained. Boardwalk takes you along theriver where there is a catch and release fish program. There is a park with a small playscape with a min rock wall, swings and 6 or 7 picnic tables. The train goes by on a bridge up overhead. Just a really pretty, quiet, relaxing place to enjoy yourself. Dexter residents are very lucky to have...
