Did you know Indian Beach is one of Oregon’s top surfing spots—where waves stay smooth and rideable nearly year-round?
Why it stands out: • Surf’s Up All Season: Winter offers clean swells and ideal offshore winds in January; summer brings gentle groundswells perfect for beginners. • Trail to the Sand: A short hike through Ecola State Park’s ancient Sitka spruce forest delivers you to half‑mile stretch of sandy beach framed by dramatic sea stacks—including the iconic Submarine Rock. • Star of the Screen: Indian Beach has featured in films like The Goonies, Kindergarten Cop, Twilight, and Point Break — for good reason, it’s cinematic gold! • Tidepool Explorer’s Paradise: At low tide, the rocky coves reveal starfish, anemones, crabs, and colorful marine life. • Lewis & Clark History: In 1806, Captain Clark passed here searching for a whale carcass; the Chinook name “Ecola” means “whale,” and this land was home to the Tillamook people. • Wildlife & Views: Keep an eye out for Roosevelt elk in the forest, bald eagles overhead, and migrating gray whales offshore in winter–spring. • Trail Events & Reopened Paths: The trail to Indian Beach reopened in early 2021 after a landslide forced years of closures, drawing hikers back to this scenic route.

If you're planning to trek through the forest, come prepared with warm clothes, a light rain jacket, trek pants to protect against mosquitoes, trek poles, an ultralight backpack, plenty of hydration, a snack, and grippy trek shoes. This forest trek is one of my most memorable experiences. I saw people of all ages on the trail, but I would only recommend it for those 10 years and older—it’s too difficult to carry young kids...
Read moreI’d like to say I enjoyed coming up here more, but I really didn’t. In the twenty years I’ve been visiting the area, I’ve never been up this way towards Ecola State Park, so I figured it was about time. It’s very pretty up here, and I really enjoyed that the beach was well secluded. On the downside... I only stayed for about 15 minutes. I must be missing some trails, but the one from Indian State Beach’s parking lot has been closed for a good time due to a slide. The way in is also essentially a one way road that’s trying to get two cars through (and some people love to take those corners fast). It costs $5 to get...
