We've been ordering beef from American Alps Ranch for six years now and they are wonderful. I did days of research on various places to get grass fed beef, both locally and ordering it sent in, before I settled on American Alps Ranch. The biggest reason I picked them was because of how the cattle are treated. They live in a beautiful location where they are cared for on a family ranch (and they really are cared for!) and then when it comes time for the slaughter, they bring a mobile kill unit to the ranch to save them the horror of being taken out of this beautiful location, shoved into a tractor trailer, and carted to some scary location to be killed. In addition to being nicer for their experience, this eliminates the souring flood of stress hormones that other grass fed cattle are subjected to which (in my opinion) affects the taste of meat.
I remember talking to Alex about how I really appreciated that his cattle only have one bad day. He then told me how they take special care to make sure that it's done as kindly as possible. Years ago they put in an electric source for the kill unit (whatever it's called) when they found the generator was stressing the animals, the animals get a special treat right before they go in, and they only do so many in a day. When the remaining animals begin getting too stressed, they stop for the day.
As far as I'm concerned, this is the absolute most ethical way I can source my meat shy of hunting it myself. The meat is delicious, it's 100% grass fed, and the animals are ethically raised and killed. Bonus points is that I get to support a fantastic local family ranch.
