Itās not hard to find, but easy to miss if that makes sense! Not sure if itās past the mile or 1.25 mile mark, but as you're walking away from Riverwalk, towards the train bridge, the river will be on your left. Thereās a bank of what looks like railroad ties built into the hill. Continue walking and youāll see a grassy path that goes up the hillside, and Iām guessing that was the driveway. This takes you up towards the homesite, but I recommend going past it because itās steep and there are piles of stones across it that makes it challenging. If you walk just a little farther, thereās a better grass path to the right that is part of the mountain bike trails. Take it to the right, and then down about 100-200 yards, take the dirt trail/mountain bike trail up that hillside on the right, and it will take you to the homesite at the top. Follow this trail as it bears right. Lots of stuff to explore up there. There are some concrete raised beds, lots of stone walls and steps and the foundation and ruins of the house. Watch out for snakes if itās warm.
You can also follow the mountain bike trails much earlier that are on the right side and between the trail and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreStumbled across this years ago. Almost every time I've been there no one else has been around. Very peaceful, and a really cool history behind this place. Yes, its a little spooky but ghosts arent realš Go check it out. Easiest way to find it is to walk down the paved trail (from main entrance near the Pump House) to a grassy clearing/pathway on the right. You will actually go past the house a little ways so you'll have to work back up. Walk up the grassy trail a little bit to find a spot to the right to climb up the embankment and then find the bike trail in the woods. Stay right and follow up (back towards pump house) towards the ridge. Use satellite view in Google maps to help. *Be aware that the bikers get priority on that trail but stay on it so we don't trample the natural area any more than it...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI went with my five year old today, and I honestly don't know the history behind the Carhartt mansion ruins. But now I want to know after seeing them today. What's left is really cool and creepy looking. The trail is really pretty and clean and right along the beautiful Catawba River. The trail is shaded and there's benches set up along the trail. Parking can be tricky so I went with another Google recommendation and parked by The Pump House.
I apologize for the emoji in the pictures of my son. As he is underage, I prefer to not post...
