Caples Lake — Attraction in South Lake Tahoe

We stopped while visiting the Lake Tahoe. California Highway 88 is a picturesque route that takes you through breathtaking high-elevation lakes and the stunning Sierra Nevada Mountain range. Caples Lake, situated at 7802 ft elevation in Kirkwood, Alpine County, is a gem along this highway. When the weather cooperates, this 2-mile-long reservoir becomes a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

In winter, it completely freezes over. Snow on top can make it a blinding white. In summer, the water is clear and dark blue. There is a resort on the north shore. There is also a campground across the road from the north shore. You can rent kayaks and canoes. The Emigrant Lake Trail runs along the south shore. One of it's tributaries, Emigrant Creek, can be accessed from that trail. The other, Woods Creek, can be accessed via a trail by the same name that leaves from the Woods Creek Trailhead, off the south side of Hwy 88, just east of the lake itself. In spite of all that, I have never seen this lake be anything close to busy. During this visit, I was fortunate to catch the lake at sunset. I've never seen it as calm as this day. Enjoy....

One of several lakes you'll encounter as you travel East on Hwy 88 at Carson Pass area. Easily accessible as the shoreline literally meets the right side of the hiway.
