Giving 5 stars because one person shouldn’t affect the ratings of this place and we like going here. I rarely write reviews but this worker has really made me angry.
My daughter has been learning to snowboard and is 9 years old. There is a woman who I’ve seen working every time I go now and she has the worst attitude and has screamed at my kid at least 2-3 times we’ve gone. (My daughter is shy and never does anything dangerous and follows rules) The last time we went was really upsetting because I finally got her to try the ski lift. She fell when getting off (on the bunny hill which is obv for learning) instead of slowing down the chairs she just sits there and lets it go full speed and the family behind us gets hurt trying to get off to go around my kid when they were trying to alert her to stop the lift (the guy was yelling yo!! Slow it down!) my child is stuck in the snow with her board like a pretzel. She comes out screaming at my kid to get out of the way to shuffle and do whatever she can to move and then blamed her and says that’s why other people got hurt. Now my kid is upset and crying and I thought I’d never get her back on the lift again but luckily she did. There was then a man up there the next time she went up and we had no issues going forward. He would slow down the chairs if someone fell or saw someone younger getting off. I really don’t think someone who has no patience for kids who are trying to learn a sport should be working a job like this. When I see her working I dread what kind of attitude she’s going to have and I don’t even want my child to have to go near her. I have never experienced something like this at a mountain and I have been boarding now for years
Other than this everyone else who works here is great. It’s clean. It’s fun. And everyone else is very nice and helpful. She even did her first lesson here and the young girl was very nice my...
Read moreConnecticut doesn't have the mountains of its neighbors (NH VT and NY... or even MA) but this is one of the better resorts in terms of quality for the price. As stated elsewhere, it's a great place to learn to ski. Actually their beginning trail is still a favorite even after skiing most of their other trails (unfortunately I haven't yet been there with everything open).
I do have to say that the lift operators have become progressively more unpleasant over the past two seasons. It's a small thing, but when you have to deal with these grumpy people over and over again (it's a small mountain with short runs!) it wears on you quickly. Their rudeness and sarcasm was especially unwelcome when I invited a friend to come skiing for the first time. You need to cut people a little slack when they're new to something!
I was a little surprised to learn that the ski shop only works on their own merchandise. So, if something goes wrong with your skis (and you didn't buy them from Mt Southington), you're on your own despite there being a ski shop on site.
The ski lodge is appropriate for the mountain. It's small and sparse but has what you need. The bathrooms are similar to what you would find on a campground. This doesn't bother me at all, but it might be a little unpleasant for others.
Overall, I enjoy this ski area, and I would recommend it to others who are in the area. But like most things, it has some areas where improvements...
Read moreI went to take my 4 year old to teach him how to snowboard. Rented equipment and bought a 4 hour lift ticket. I Walked him over to the bunny hill and proceeded to show him how to use the carpet ride and teach him how to go down the hill. I was dressed in snowboard gear including a helmet but didn’t bring my board. I wanted to be able to pick him up and run behind him to make sure he was safe. 45 minutes in i was told I needed a lift ticket to be on the bunny hill. I walked over to guest services to tell them my dilema that I wanted to teach my son. They said I could book a lesson, or buy a beginner area lift ticket for $40 which I was agreeable to, however the guest services attendant said I would need to have my snowboard with me which I said that was fine, then she told me I would have to have 1 boot strapped in at all times. I stated that I did not want to ride I wanted to be able to grab him and instruct him on how to ride. I reminded them that the instructors on the bunny hill don’t have snowboards on as they teach their beginners and they shrugged and said that’s them, you can’t do that. It’s upsetting that you can’t bring your child to the bunny hill and teach them to ride, and they make it so difficult the only way to do it is to pay for a lesson. I was looking forward to teaching my son myself. Moral of the story it’s not the ideal place if you want to teach your sons how to ride a...
