This is the 2nd visit in 30 days & are enjoying our stay. It's not the quietest park due to the highways on both sides... I treat it as white noise. Just an FYI, if you are going west on Hwy. 98, Google maps GPS will tell you to go past the entrance & do a u-turn. There is a left turn lane at the entrance...no need to u-turn. I've tried reporting it to Google, so we'll see what happens.
This is a well maintained park! Close to Mobile, Spanish Fort & Daphne. Grocery stores nearby. The park expanded recently by adding 45 sites , 4 cabins & a huge bathhouse. No shade in the new section. Unfortunately, the new section is where the trails used to be. But I guess it makes for good biking for the kiddos. All the sites are paved, spacious, level & with full hook-ups. There's also 7 tent sites.
Great place for birders! Many species, including great horned owls & ospreys. During our stay we saw an adult owl couple & its owlet. So cool! Great horned owls are highly territorial and seem to hang out in the area where the Gateway to the Delta starts. There's also a boat launch, canoe & kayak launch, fishing pier & fishing beach. A trail to a boardwalk (Gateway to the Delta) will give you a .6 mile loop to see the bay & maybe a gator, otters or snakes...not to mention birds! If you're on the trail at the right time, you can find wild blackberries. Excellent place to see some beautiful sunsets with Mobile in the distance!
The water pressure during our 1st stay was real low…barely enough to start the on-demand water heater. As we left the park, there were signs indicating that the water would be off. Presumably, the cause of the low pressure has been fixed because the pressure was great this time. The water is perfect, not hard or soft and tastes good.
This park has GREAT wifi! And, if you have Verizon, you’ll get a great signal here. No fire rings unless you’re at a tent site. You’ll find a few fire pits scattered around the park. The RV sites have elevated grills & picnic tables. Even if you’re not on a waterfront site, I think all the sites have some view of the water. Canada geese are wandering the park…they leave lots of poop wherever they go, so watch out for that if you’re in the grass.
Overall, this is a great park and I highly...
Read moreRecently had a four night stay at this park; well three we decided to leave a day early. Pros - we planned to arrive after 1500 when the staff goes home so wee called and they provided the gate access code. Our assigned site was on the bay side with a nice view of the water and sun set. The site was asphalt, wide enough for our small trailer and tent, had a picnic table and a small grill but no fire pit. We did see folks using the grill as a makeshift fire pit. The hook ups for electricity, sewer and water were located close to the site which made hook up easy. The park trash dumpsters were located next to the boat dock; a short walk from our site. Cons - During our stay only one of the piers was open. The other which goes out and encompasses the nature area was closed for repairs but opened briefly the day we left. In multiple telephone calls this was never mentioned to include when we stopped by the office the next morning to complete our check in. My wife did notice a small sign posted on the bulletin board. On the website it states the bathroom/showers were recently renovated. We'll have to disagree; there were two bathhouses but only one had usable showers. In the mens' there were three showers, and all three showed signs of mildew, mold, or just dirt but it was hard to tell. Basically along the baseboard of all three showers there were about 5" of unknown black substance. My wife tells me the womens' were in as bad of shape. During our stay, we had hot water one evening. When we complained, we were told one person complained the water was too hot; so in the entire park one person complained so they changed the water temperature to barely luke warm. We were told they would have someone come and adjust the water, but it never happened. We did notice the HOST family cleaning the showers/bathrooms but there was no posted sign of what those cleaning hours were. We had a late start one morning and my wife was rushed out of the bathroom by the staff. Given the cost for staying at this park, we expected better. We won't be back and would be hard pressed to recommend to...
Read moreI recently stayed one night in early October with my wife and 16 month old daughter in our travel trailer. The campground was nice and clean, and seeing the alligators from the dock was really neat (they have some big 6 footers there....pretty cool, until you realize that they can walk right up into your camp site if they wanted too).
I had seen the reviews mentioning the problem with the ants...so we brought some ajax powder with us and ant spray. THEY ARE NOT JOKING ABOUT THE ANTS.....THEY ARE EVERYWHERE! As soon as I backed into the site and stepped out of the truck, the ants where up both legs all the way to my knees before I even knew it. It was insane, I can't even try to explain how bad the ants are there.
We put ajax powder and and spray around the entire camper, everything that touched the ground....tires, front jack, everything. Everything was great until we woke up at 5am with ants all over us....in the bed, covering the camper floor, in our daughters bed, up and down the walls, in every cabinet an drawer in the camper....it was crazy!! Turns out that those little bastards made their way up the the power cable and right into the camper...filling it from top to bottom....millions of ants. I'm not even joking. At least they didn't bite.
We got up, did our best to sweep out the thousands of ants all over the floor, got our daughter free of ants and loaded into the truck, and hit the road. Once we got to our final destination (Pensacola), it took around 3-4 days before we were able to rid the camper of the majority of the ants...nothing like going to sleep every night and then waking up with ants crawling on you.
Long story short.......if you go to Meaher State Park....be prepared to be covered in ants, they are everywhere....and will invade your camper in just a few hours. I can't believe people even camp there with the ants being do bad. Stay away, unless you like being covered in ants.
I would comment on the showers and bathrooms, but we got out of there so fast after we woke up covered in ants, we never got a chance to check out...
