Steamboat resort, what a place to visit. The first thing I want to start with is that I have not stayed at their hotels as I live within driving distance of the resort. The first thing you will notice when you visit the resort is how dated it looks. The resort is aging, and it's very noticeable, from the base area to the lifts, even on mountain dining looks dated. The resort could definitely use a good face lift, and to be fare, they are in the midst of a 3 year project, so I will update my review once its done. My second criticism of the resort is its failure to disburse guests effectively. Unlike other massive resorts like Vail, Breck, or even Keystone Steamboat only has 1 base area. This forces all the guests to load up on 1 gondola to go to the top of thunderhead, where they are finally able to disburse across the mount. This pinch point causes major lift lines for people trying to get up the hill. Now, there are other ways to avoid this, but I'll keep those to myself 😆. My 3rd criticism of the mountain is the lack of groomed terrain. I dont know if their grooming staff is just extra short or what their plan is but unless you ride sunshine lift there is limited groomed terrain to ride which is a bummer because it forces beginners and experienced riders onto the same limited terrain. There's definitely the opportunity to fix this, though, and I would like to see some more options for fast groomers off storm peak lift and thunder head express lift. Overall, the terrain at Steamboat is very fun to ride. The resort is very well balanced in progressive difficulty. There is terrain for everyone. The mountain is a little complex to navigate, and it is very easy to get lost or accidentally take yourself to the opposite side of the resort with one wrong turn. I would also say Steamboat is notorious for surprises in their runs. Ive taken groomers that all the sudden change to massive mogul fields and ive taken mellow tree runs that turn into steep shoots so be prepared and study your map before dipping off into oblivion. Steamboat launched an app this season that has some better maps and a tracking feature on it. So far the app has been decent, however the menus can be complicated to navigate. it definitely needs some fine tuning. Overall, Steamboat is a good time, but the resort acts like they are an A+ resort when they really are a B at best. All of their Lift tickets, food, rentals, and shopping are overpriced, and the resort is difficult to get to if you are not willing to pay $40 for parking. I hope Altera makes some improvements to Steamboat over the years because as it stands, they are far behind the curve.
I wanted to take a second and talk about the food on the mountain as this is what most of my reviews are on. The food at Steamboat resort, and to clarify the resort food not the businesses that sell food that are not part of the resort, is frustrating. This is something that every resort ive been to struggles with and I would really like to see a change here. The resort tries desperately to make their cafeteria food gourmet and its just sad. Adding truffle oil to cheap french fries and some cheap garlic salt does not make your fries better. Adding some crazy sauses and weard pickles to your burger does not make it better. Having weard thick chips on your nachos dosen't make them better. Stop trying to make cafeteria food fancy just stick with cheap and basic. If I want fancy food on mountain I will go to one of you fine...
Read moreMy visit to Steamboat Ski Resort was an unforgettable experience. Traveling from Florida, my daughter and I were eager to hit the slopes for the first time, and Steamboat delivered in so many ways, making it a trip to remember. Despite a couple of initial challenges, the exceptional service, friendly staff, and quality instruction made it all worthwhile.
A Smooth Start for My Daughter
I booked a package that included ski rentals and lessons for both my daughter and me, scheduled for a Monday—a day that turned out to be delightfully uncrowded. Checking in my daughter at 9 AM was a breeze. I was impressed with how well they organized everything, with her lesson starting at 9:30 to accommodate parents like me dropping off their kids.
My daughter, who’s usually very timid about trying new things, had a fantastic time. The instructors were incredibly patient and supportive, helping her feel comfortable and even carrying her at times when she needed it. Seeing her on top of the mountain, smiling and confident, was such a proud moment. It was her first experience skiing, and thanks to the amazing team, she now wants to come back and do it all again.
A Rocky Start for Me
While my daughter’s start was seamless, my own experience began with a bit of confusion. As a first-time skier, I didn’t realize I needed to collect my equipment before heading up the mountain. Unfortunately, when I mentioned I had a class, someone directed me straight to the lift with my ticket, and I found myself at the top of the mountain without any gear. This oversight delayed me by over an hour as I had to head back to the base to get my equipment.
Thankfully, the staff’s kindness made up for the inconvenience. A friendly lady named Rachel stepped in and gave me a private lesson to help me catch up with my group. Rachel’s guidance was exceptional—she was patient, thorough, and encouraging. By the end of the class, I was confidently skiing down the mountain at a level 4 or 5. I even soloed a few trails afterward and felt ready to explore more on my own.
Highlights and Takeaways • Friendly and Supportive Staff: Everyone I interacted with was approachable and accommodating, from the instructors to the lady who helped me navigate my mix-up. • Lessons and Instruction: Both my daughter and I left our classes with new skills and confidence. The instructors went above and beyond to make us feel at ease. • Organization: The planning for kids’ lessons was fantastic, but better communication for first-time adult skiers would improve the experience.
The Price Factor
While I loved almost everything about my time at Steamboat, the pricing is undeniably steep. At nearly $300 for a day ticket, it’s not an experience everyone can easily afford. That said, the quality of service and instruction made it feel like a worthwhile investment, especially for a first-timer like me.
Final Thoughts
Steamboat Ski Resort offers an exceptional skiing experience, especially for beginners and families. The instructors’ patience and expertise turned what could have been an overwhelming first experience into a joyful and empowering adventure. Despite the high price and a few initial missteps, I’m already looking forward to coming back.
Recommendation: If you’re a first-time skier or traveling with kids, Steamboat is an excellent choice for top-tier instruction and a supportive environment. Be prepared for the cost, but rest assured, the memories and skills you gain will...
Read moreOver rated. Any of the Epic resorts are superior in just about every way. Steamboat hasn't sunk any money in their aging lift system and it really shows. Wait times are long and their lifts are mostly all 2-4 people and slow compared to other more modern resorts. They are also very low to the ground and will bite you on the calf from time to time. Most of the trails are cut up and ungroomed and they squandered the recent 2 feet of snow by over packing the powder and failing to do basic maintenance like filling gaps and holes, instead leaving unpadded metal X beams half way buried. Most of the runs have serious quality issues, especially on the left side of the map where you have large lumps, bumps and mogul like appearance but its really just cut marks from all the skis creating gashes over time and it makes the trails needlessly terrible. Signage is scarce, especially crossing routes back to the base and they close lifts early 3:15 pm. The amenities on the mountain are few and far between with few tables and even fewer ski racks. We stopped to use the bathroom and all of the tables and racks were pushed to the side of the building and on their side. People were just leaving their skis and poles in the middle of the way because they had no other option. The staff was hit or miss. Some of the lifts had people constantly yelling and herding people trying to compensate for the aging and slow lift system. This was a Friday, not a weekend day but it was still ridiculous. I watched one worker berate a 10 year old boy because he missed a lift and the parents were asking her to stop while she actually stopped the lift to continue to berate them about missing the lift. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I was under the impression that Icon was a premium line and charged accordingly. There was nothing at this resort that was premium and I would put any Epic resort Breck, Beaver, Keystone, Vail etc well...
