Settlement Quarry Preserve

Settlement Quarry Preserve trail is an easy 1.6 mile hike from the parking lot, that opens up on top of a 160 foot elevation gain tail at the old quarry. The preserve lies 2 miles northeast of Stonington on Settlement Hill and has been closed since the 1980’s. Scenic views of Webb Cove, Merchant Row, Isle au Haut, and the Camden Hills. You’ll find an information placket about the old quarry and convenient seating cut out from the granite, a great place to stay out...

It's a nice walk to the quarry and then a trail inside to see what the quarry would have been like. The granite layers with natural splits are still visible, some with the man made holes and hooks. You can clearly see the color specs in the granite. Watch out for bugs! Having a guided tour or self guided tour recording or at least more posted information placards would have made the experience richer. It's easy for a layman to just pass by without...

Very nice hike around a quarry that was used in the 20th century to supply granite for the nation’s courts and public buildings. The views of the ocean from the top are really nice. The hike is about an hour. We had a trip planned to isle au haut and the mail boat was leaving at 2:30 pm and we reached the town of Stonington about two hours ahead of time. It made sense to do this hike. The trail is well maintained and meanders through a...

This was a nice 1/2 mile walk in to see the Quarry. The old dirt road is kept well and has a slight uphill grade on the way in and down on the way out. There is a great view of the surrounding area, and you can almost imagine the sound of hammering and drilling that was going on here. Take an hour and take a walk. It's worth it!

Looking for easy to moderate trails with some level trails in the mix. Perfect walk with our 2 dogs on variety of terrain, woods, open areas with several great views from granite boulders with plenty of places to sit and chill. Enjoyed reading the history of the quarry. Well marked trails.
