My children beg to go to the #Chickasaw Cultural Center on a regular basis and we finally made it! They were celebrating the Toompalli' Festival (and I am appropriately posting this on the summer solstice) so we had to go check it out! Stompdance, Stickball, the museum, and the rest are always worth exploring again and again. Plus, any excuse to wear their ribbon shirts is a good excuse! We love to feel immersed in our history and I learn something new every time I go. ❤️ Chickashsha poya.

This is a beautiful center. We went for the Toompalli festival, and they had many activities for the children. It was very sobering to go through the exhibit. It is one thing to read about what the government put the Native Americans through, quite another to read letters from the children and then see one of the barber chairs where they sat while hair was cut off. I can only compare it to my walk through the Holocaust museum. There are no words to describe the profound effect it had on me, How could this happen? Therefore, I was delighted to see the young people dance. New generations to carry on the traditions of their people. To have pride in who they are. Everyone there was very kind and I would love to go there again. The weather was turning,so we were not able to go through the village, or the butterfly garden The terrain could be taxing for some, so they have trams that will pick you up in the parking area, and take you to your desired destination. Beautiful theatre, great cafe. A must see if you are in the area.

It is winter here so it is the quiet season which means we had the place almost to ourselves. Sadly this meant the trees and gardens were sad and walking around the grounds was very chilly. That said I could not recommend the Chickasaw Cultural Centre highly enough. Despite the cold we had a great time here. The dancers put on a great show just for the 2 of us (no one else was in the theatre). Very good exhibition. The museum is a wonderful place to find out about the Chickasaw Nation with some terrific displays (many hands on). The staff were knowledgeable and happy to chat & explain things. The cafe by the theatre is inexpensive and would suit most tastes (I had a traditional dish they called "Chickasaw Special" - tasty). My only criticism is that the prices in the gift shop are very high when I compare them with similar places we have visited. Bottom line is do not miss this extremely important and interesting centre.

This was an amazing experience. Me and my wife took a detour on our way back from Houston Texas to stop in at this cultural center. Upon arriving at the gates we were greeted by an employee with vim and vigor. The employee gave us clear instructions into pamphlets to educate us on upcoming events as well as current events.

Parking was a breeze. Once we got into the cultural center we asked a customer service representative sitting behind the desk what to do if we were limited on time.

She told us that checking out the village was worth the cold walk and that's what we set off to do.

The visit to the village was one filled with excitement, emotions, and gratefulness. We learned many things in the 45 minutes we were there.

Once we wrapped up in the village we headed to the cafe to grab a quick bite to eat and ordered Taco meals on fry bread( which was much bigger than we anticipated.

Still fire though.

The employees in the cafe were curious and had good energy. One of the employees informed us of the events coming up in the spring which was really helpful and appreciated.

We took one last stop at the gift shop on the way out (why not right). The two women working in the gift shop seemed to be focused on other things when we entered but did their best to balance our time with the tasks they had at hand. We picked up some food coffee some stickers and magnets for one of our friends while there. The coffee is great. Overall I was really pleased with this short but surprisingly insightful visit. WE...

I want to sincerely thank the Holisso Research Center, and especially Tabitha, for giving me one of the most beautiful and healing experiences I’ve ever had on this journey.

As a Freedman descendant, navigating these spaces can be complicated. The paper trail exists—but it’s messy. That’s just part of what we deal with. You come in with names, stories, and a deep connection to your ancestors, but without a “clean” set of documents, people often look at you with doubt or distance.

But not here.

The moment I mentioned my ancestor’s name, Tabitha already knew who she was. She had studied her court cases, knew the dates and the state—it wasn’t just acknowledgment, it was recognition. We talked, we bonded, and I finally felt like someone truly saw me and the history I carry.

Tabitha was kind, calm, and patient. She explained everything in a way that felt personal and powerful. I’ve visited many places over the years in search of connection, truth, and clarity—but this was by far the best experience I’ve ever had. It fed my spirit and lifted a weight off my heart.

Thank you, Tabitha. Thank you, Holisso. This meant more than...
