Red Rock Red Springs Boardwalk and Calico Overlook are located west of Las Vegas, bout 20 minutes from the strip and 3 miles before the Red Rock Canyon entrance. Theres really no way to sugar coat it, this place is beautiful, you could lose yourself in a day here (especially if the weather agrees). The best part its free.
The Red Springs Boardwalk (in middle near picnic area) is a short walk about 5.5 miles (this area is also perfect for those using a wheelchair or mobile scooter). As you walk around it you'll see various Infograph's explaining the area. The highlight for me, was the area that has one rock that has a pictograph etched on the side of it. Also along the way, you'll see humming birds, rabbits and a host of other little furry animals, it's gorgeous.
The Calico Overlook (on left side in picnic area) is actually a trail that is connected to the Red Spring Boardwalk, and climbs up a little bit in elevation (this trail is a typical rocky hiking trail and is unpaved) and leads to a few peaks that has some of the most beautiful views of the Red Rocks area.
Overall, the area is perfect, even if you don't feel like hiking or going up the board walk, there is plenty of covered picnic tables and permanent BBQ grills available, at the base of the boardwalk. So if you just want time to spend time with family, have an afternoon lunch and enjoy some views,...
Read moreI rock climb in this area a lot. Whenever I pass through, I see a lot of people disrespecting the environment. It's a beautiful oasis in a pocket of desert that enables a lot of wildlife to live. The board walk is to protect that nature, as is the wooden fence surrounding it. Please do not go off trail or out of boundaries. Pick up all of your trash, and protect the place for the next person to enjoy.
