If you like history like I do and hiking, this is the place to go. It is also a great place to pull off the road and have lunch in your RV or bring your own. The views are awesome and there is an information area that has pamphlets to teach you about the area. It is in the middle of the desert, so it is definitely a destination point or you can see it from the highway and turn off to drive directly to it. There are nice restrooms and a Host on site. Be safe and stay on the trails. Also, make sure to take water to drink as it is very warm in the Summer. 07/01/2017: I'm posting some new pics! This area was once covered in water. In one of the new pics, you can see a Fossil in the rock. I'm not sure how close to Fort Rock it is, but there is a place called Fossil Lake that has actual sand dunes! Check it out on Google maps and remember to bring lots of water and a full tank of gas bcuz it is in the middle of nowhere! People ride motorcycles and Quads on the dunes. It is illegal to take any of the fossils from the lake bed. It is a dry lake, so there's no water for swimming. However, it is a great place to visit and learn about the history of the area as...

Great place to explore and hike. It is truly mesmerizing as you admire the geology, especially when you consider its prehistoric significance. The terrain isn't too rough if you decide to take it easy. Otherwise, there are plenty of opportunities to climb over rocks and search for lizards if that is your desire. You'll see plenty of small animals from lizards to jackrabbits to birds of prey. I recommend wearing sunscreen since the area is very exposed to the sun and shade isn't readily available. If climb along the back past the fence, you'll eventually come to a point you can't go any further, but you will discover a cool...

Fort rock is one of my favorite places.so much history to learn about .the state park at the foot of the rock.its as nice as they get.nothing better than commercialization of a natural area .I kind of like it better 30 years ago.one my first trip there they even had a small store and gas station in town. That's down town fort rock ,by the way.only odd thing was a farmer not to far from the rock called the local police for reason unknown.i was bone hunting on BLM land.a mile away from his farm ,whatever I became friends with the officers.vary good people .it was during the covid 19 .nightmare.bottom line I give all a...

We visited hole in the ground east of here and realized this was very closeby. As we drove closer, it looked so amazing standing tall from the Oregon platlands. As we entered, it was not just beautiful but awesome. How big of a fort this really was like a big circle with the opening for entrance. We love all the interesting rock formations and different paths to hike. Our favorite was the hike to the highest part southwest of the park. A little steep at times, but nothing anyone can't handle. If I had to choose only one path, this would be it. You get the best views all around the park from here.
