We've be loyal Aspen snowboarders for 16 holidays in a row but decided to head out west and check out Mt Bachelor. It's an impressive mountain and we were excited to check it off our list. Unfortunately the ticket purchase process was really clunky. While in line, we had to log into a website, enter all our information, go print our tickets outside at a seperate kiosk which was an incredibly long process compared to other ski resorts we've been to (that's why I dropped one star).
Regardless, we bought a 3-day pass, hopped on the slopes and were ready for our first run. After 2 runs, I had a kid t-bone me even after I yelled "on your RIGHT" three times. Apparently he was distracted by his dad with a camera just 20-30 feet away (not on ski's but in a gray jacket and a huge camera). The next thing I remember is being flat on my back in such pain I was screaming and couldn't speak to my spouse who checked on the kid that plowed into me and then came to me to try and calm me down. We think the man with the camera motioned for the kid to flee the scene, even while I was writhing in extreme pain and suffered from a cracked tailbone and concussion.
We were close to the bottom of the lift and Bachelor urgent care center but I was so dibilitated that I had to have the ski patrol come and carry me 100-200 feet down. They followed proper protocol and were extremely careful to not injure me further because I literally could NOT move and was in excruciating pain.
Once they got me stable, I was ambulanced to St Charles Medical Center in Bend (unfortunately a staggering $1900 ride + $15 per mile as per the paramedic) but there was no way I could sit upright in our rental car to the hospital so we had no choice. I am appauled at the audacity lack of humanism of a father to encourage their child to flee the scene of an accident they were responsible for (my spouse said he was Asian, I'm not hating here, just stating an ethnic fact). I wish the slopes had camera's (perhaps they do) so we could find this jerk and have him help us with the $15,000 medical bills from my hospital CT scans and ambulance ride.
FIVE STARS TO THE MT B. ER STAFF AND RAY: We were EXTREMELY appreciative of how HELPFUL the Mt Bachelor staff team was. They were able to see that we only had TWO runs before the accident and that we had just paid an hour before. We were told that they would refund my 3-day Pass and receive a voucher for my spouse's 3-day Pass. My spouse spoke with Ray and when he heard about how horrible my accident was, a hit and run on the slopes, he refunded us the almost $1k in full.
I am under the impression that if you hit and run, your ski pass is revoked but if they were visitors, what restitution do innocent people have? We didn't hear if anything happened to this horrible father who no doubt is cursed with tragic karma after this, but an innocent person shouldn't be left with an astronomical hospital bill with a copay more than the ambulance ride itself.
FIVE+ STARTS to Mt Bachelor staff... I wish they watched video to find this jerk father. My favorite meme: Karma is a patient gangsta. It helps me...
Read moreThe mountain is 4 stars. The resort is 2.5. The camping used to be great, but some jack_ss decided that running snow moving equipment from 1 am to 6 am every day from Sunday to Thursday was a good idea and it put a real damper on this rating. There was hardly any snow, we were camping in spring and our (2) families were hard pressed to get a decent night's sleep for the entirety of our stay. I have worked at several resorts and in the parking lot of a few, so I have the utmost respect and appreciation for the front line folks that are doing their respective jobs. IDKWTF management is doing. I know that they were trying to prep for their big festival weekend, but every aspect of what was going on was totally inconsiderate of the many campers that were staying there and an utter waste of resources. Scraping the sidewalls of the snow bank right in front of the camping area at 3 am is the most dickish of moves.
When you book your camping, you agree to their cancellation/no show policy (which, by the word, seems like they take very seriously). It's a f'n joke. We found out that you can pay for a site for a week or a month and never show, but as long as you "check in" (tell them that you will show sometime between day 1 and day 7) they don't GAF. Our discovery was made when I attempted to get our camp closer to our family friends who were also camping during the same time. This was our third spring break at the resort and will be the last that we camp there. In years past, we spoke to the camp host and they'd be able to make a few adjustments to accommodate (which has always been very much appreciated). I wouldn't normally take this much effort to write a review, but the way this all unfolded was a slap in the face. I was told by multiple hosts, guest services and the parking manager that all the powered sites were booked solid for the entirety of our stay (we had successfully booked 3 nights powered and another without), yet every single night there were 4-5 vacant powered sites that included the site next to the family that we were camping with and attempting to get moved next to.
Every single day: "Nope, every powered site is booked out." Every following morning: multiple vacancies in powered sites
It was extremely disappointing. Our family RV's to many different resorts. This was the most obnoxiously unnecessary use of snow moving equipment I have ever experienced. What makes it worse is that I've done that job and know, first hand, how dumb it is to waste the level of resources wasted to move a few inches of snow while 40? campsites are TRYING TO SLEEP. I've been camping when FEET of snow fell and the machines usually came through between 4-5 am. This bullsht started at 1 am, every f'n night.
Apparently, there's an abundance of diesel to accompany the absence of brain cells.
It sucks, too, because we've had lots of fun...
Read morePowdr Corp. has ruined Mt. Bachelor. Due to the greed of this corporation, profits ALWAYS trump equity and inclusion and it's evident with every new decision by management. I grew up going to this mountain and before Powdr Corp. took over, Mt. Bachelor used to be a family friendly mountain with reasonable prices. However, most Bend families have no choice but to drive the extra distance to Hoodoo or spend their entire paycheck at Mt. Bachelor to watch rich people skip ahead of them with their new "fast pass" incentive. I have had plenty of bad experiences with Powdr Corp. management but my experience yesterday takes the cake. It's important to note that in addition to raising prices and rolling out the fast pass system, Powdr Corp.'s next agenda is to eliminate the opportunity for low income families to learn how to ski for free at Sunrise Lodge. Last year Early riser and Alpenglow were free but now they require new skiers to pay $49 to access these two very small beginner lifts. I'm teaching my wife and 6-year old how to ski and since we can't afford the $147, we went up at 2:30pm today to ski the magic carpet (which will more than likely not be free next year). After using the carpet once, it broke down and the lift operator told us it won't be working for the rest of the day. As we were walking away from the carpet I overheard one of the employees say "I don't even know why we fix this thing. It's not like it generates any money." We then proceeded the Sunrise ticket office to explain our dilemma and hopeful that considering the situation, management would allow my family to use Early Riser lift knowing that the carpet was down and that there were only 4-6 people on the hill. Instead, we were told that our only option to ski before the mountain closed in 45min. was to pay the $147. Although my son looked pretty defeated in all of his ski gear, we unfortunately made the decision to drive the 40 minutes back home. This form of corporate greed is only going to continue ruining Mt. Bachelor for locals and I really hope that with enough complaints, Powdr Corp. will have no choice but to begin listening to their customers. At the very least this corporation should consider reallocating all of the money they are investing in the fast past system and put that money towards keeping Outback and Northwest open. Do better...
