The Chimney Rock Trail is located along the western end of Route 24 in Capital Reef National Park. There is a carpark directly off the road where you find the trailhead.
This is a challenging, 3.6 mile loop trail that makes a strenuous ascent up a fault and eventually reaching a nearby peak summit where you are treated to outstanding panorama views extending all the way to the Waterfold Pocket deep within the national park.
Looping back down from the summit, you are treated to intense colours of the exposed layers of the Colorado Plateau. Here you are able to get close to deep yellow, green, purple, red and grey(ish) colour ground deposits at times situated right next to the hiking trail. We also found a sample of petrified wood sample on the trail. This was very neat to see.

Read moreGorgeous hike and was practically empty in early March. It was VERY windy on the exposed first half of the loop, so bundle up if you’re heading here in the cool months. Not a lot of shade, so bring water and sun protection in the summer. The elevation sneaks up on you for a relatively short hike.
Absolutely stunning views and easy to navigate. Highly, highly recommend if you’re in the area.
