Powderhorn Prairie and Marsh Nature Preserve — Attraction in Thornton Township

I took my boys canoeing here. The lake is nice, and it's surrounded by park space. There were quite a few people fishing, which is relaxing. I saw a huge fish jump out of the water in front of us when we were in the middle of the lake. It made me wish I had a fishing rod! I would return for a smaller, calm lake to canoe on; however, there was a fair bit of noise from the road and the train tracks. We had a nice time, nonetheless. The forest preserve district works hard here because I visited to enjoy spring blooms even though snow fell that morning. Fire maintenance works here and if you carefully walk the parking lot, you can find a short trail to see emergent plants. Beaver are active here; we found a beaver carcass on the shore.
