It’s difficult to rate a nature preserve bad. Long Island is extremely populated and doesn’t really offer lots of nature land as it’s pretty developed. I stumbled across this as I left work, and I randomly in different places. This place has a parking lot which is great. Some people might complain its not paved but I like the rustic look and feel. I took a trail deep into the preserve and it was very pretty the brush made a walk way tunnel and you can see it in my pics. I think if i had a complaint was that traffic can be heard just a short distance away so this distracts from hearing birds or other wild life. Very calming place and serene. Not too strenuous as its flat but paths can be long. Always try and visit with someone else to be safe this goes for any...
Read moreGreat trail system typical of long island. Around 14.5 miles of main trail and single track off shoots. 12 off shoots in total with some being really short and the last 2 being pretty long. Difficulty of trails is minimal, but some are new and still semi soft. Also there are barely any down hills so there's no rest time. There is also old train tracks in there. Huge improvement from what it was. Not much elevation change but lots of twists and turns. Great for speed demons and cornering freaks. Again typical LI XC. If you aren't in it for the exercise then this place isn't for you. There are ticks...

By the 1960s, the facility had grown into the largest mental hospital in the world. Some of the old railroad tracks are seen in the East South East part of the park. The trains transported patients, doctors and nurses along with coal trains for the power station on the secondary track. It was called the Edgewood Spur to the LIRR. FYI there are still hatches to an underground labyrinth used for steam power.
Enjoy your adventures and be careful. I found evidence of homeless...
