Lansing Manor is a beautiful estate overlooking the Schoharie river valley. It is located right next to the Blenheim-Gilboa Visitors Center and Mine Kill State Park. The house is over 200 years old and is a reflection of what life was like in the Schoharie Valley. It is easily one of the best preserved houses in the entire region. The house is two stories high with a hipped roof. There are four bedrooms, a parlor, and nine different fireplaces. It was originally deeded to John Lansing Jr. in 1819 and was used as his summer home. Lansing was not at the house that often during his lifetime, but the house was used by his daughter and his son-in-law Jacob Livingston Sutherland. Lansing himself was a mayor of Albany and prior to that he served in the Revolutionary War under General Philip Schuyler. Interestingly, Lansing himself disappeared under mysterious circumstances. In 1829, he was seen getting a letter in the mail in NYC. After that he was never seen again. There are many great rooms to see in this house. Among them is the kitchen, which is located in the basement. In the kitchen a large table is set with kitchen utensils that are over 200 years old. Among some of the interesting artifacts to be found in the kitchen are a toe toaster, brick oven, pickling room, irons, and a fully stocked pantry. The library is also unique. Here there is a nice fireplace, pictures of the family, and some great historic furniture. There is a unique American Flag located upstairs, called a Mariner’s Flag, which is not like many other early US flags I have ever seen. Many of the displays upstairs capture what family life was like in this time period. Here you can see and feel what it was like to be a kid or an adult in the house in this time period. Another unique feature here is the windows. There are different windows in the house that are signed by different owners or occupants of the house. It is really amazing to see their “autographs” etched in glass. You can get a lot out of this house and admission is free. Also, check the NY Power Authority museum while you’re at Lansing Manor. It too has many engaging displays. Together these places offer much to do. Mine Kill State Park is also located right door. It is hard to find a better looking or preserved historic house in the...

My guide was highly knowledgable. The visit really takes you back to the early days of our country, with both its glories and shortcomings. Also, don't miss the New York Power Authority visitor center on the same property. It's an...
