TLDR: These tours are accessible, though not EASILY accessible, but definitely worth trying! FULL REVIEW: We booked a tour with this company after confirming wheelchair accessibility for a member of our party. Upon arrival, the staff was welcoming and helpful, offering for us to drop off the wheelchair user at the bottom of the hill near the dock as it was a steep, rocky distance. She was able to get down okay in her motorized chair, but the dock itself was rather precarious—no guardrails, a bit crooked, and a large, steep downhill hump. We fortunately made it okay. Entrance onto the boat was possible despite a high lip through the door—it took 2 people pushing the powered chair to make it. Upon entry, we were concerned when noticing that the doorway lip was even higher from the inside. We had about an hour or so before our first stop to figure out a method to exit as it was clear we could not follow the same procedure as entering. The breakfast was way better than anticipated (variety of breakfast sandwiches, potatoes, French toast sticks, cold cereal, oatmeal, muffins, coffee, and juices). Captain Skip and tour guide Liam were very nice!! We wish Liam had provided more details about the nature and wildlife of the area, but the history was definitely interesting, and local attractions/restaurant recommendations were helpful. At our first stop (the lighthouse) Liam and the Captain were open to our suggestions for troubleshooting the doorway obstacle, and it worked great—we utilized the ramp that they were placing between the boat and dock for the doorway. We wish we had spent less time at the lighthouse and more time at Boldt Castle. Upon leaving the boat at the end, that precarious dock was more difficult and took someone to guide and push the powered chair over that final hump because she had started to go crooked, careening toward the unguarded edge!! The chair then got stuck in the stones on the hill so we brought our vehicle part way down. But what’s an adventure without a little challenge or two?! Overall, thanks for a great afternoon! Definitely recommend, but caution those with...
Read moreI went on the 5 hour tour, and had a very nice time. We visited the island with the lighthouse first, and people were allowed to go to the top in small groups. It's a very small island, but nice to walk around, and there are picnic tables, and shady places to sit to have lunch. The guide pointed out sites of interest on the trip, and told us facts about different islands and famous people who have lived in the area. Some interesting history. Heart Island was nice, but honestly, I enjoyed walking around outside the most. :) There is an elevator inside, for those who might need it. Things to keep in mind: It is good to get there the half hour ahead that they recommend. At least. The parking lot was already getting pretty full at that time, but it might depend on which tour you're taking. You might want to start standing in line early. After we all stood/sat around for a bit, it formed suddenly... and you may want to be closer to the front to get a seat at the side of the boat if you care to take photos on the way. The view is probably not as great on the aisle. If you are picking up the bagged lunch, you might want to bring a small cooler bag for it. On a hot day, you don't want a sandwich with mayo sitting out that long. It's possible to leave items on the boat during stops, and it's also nice to have a cold drink waiting. There is also food available to buy on Heart Island, but don't leave it till the last minute. Don't want to miss your ride! It is a long ride. It was pleasant just being on the water, but it might make too long of a day for...
Read moreCan't begin to say enough good things about my experience here!
We were staying in Hammond, NY, and found this tour in a visitors guide.
Went online, and found that we could book a 2 hour and 45 minute tour in a glass-bottomed boat to Rock Island Lighthouse in the Thousand Islands.
The price was very good for the value- there were quite a few interesting points that were visited and the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable (and humorous).
There was also an option to purchase a lunch for an additional $10, which turned out to be way better than I expected. Options were plentiful and included a side, a bag of chips, cookies, and a drink. The lunches were made in a food truck on site, and they also had fried cheese curds!!!!!! Best fried cheese curds I have ever eaten.
As for the tour, the stop at the Rock Island lighthouse was nothing short of amazing. There is plenty of room to roam about the island for pictures, a small museum/gift shop to browse, and most importantly- the lighthouse!
The tour guide took small groups of people up into the top of the lighthouse and gave a brief history of the island. He was very passionate about the history, and that made the lesson even more interesting.
The remainder of the tour also included many historical points of interest such as sunken ships, shoals, islands, underwater features and locations of former structures. Along the way, additional sights such as gigantic ocean going vessels and wildlife are also viewed.
I highly recommend Clayton Island Tours if you are in the area and want to...
