Mirror Lake Sandstone Ridge campground review:
Stayed for 5 nights in late June 2025, campsite #91
Pros: -Gorgeous park -Nice fishing pier & boardwalk -Decently private campgrounds, you really feel like you’re in the middle of the woods -Quiet -There is wildlife around, although if you’re a scaredy cat like me, this might be a little bit more of a con. Deer, raccoons, water snakes, a possum maybe, I even saw a beaver or muskrat or something of the sort. Didn’t see or hear any coyotes -Clean showers and bathrooms, cleaned daily -Accessible potable water -Cheap -Bugs were not bad but that might’ve been due to the insane amount of rain we had -Trees provided good shade so you’re not baking in the sun -Checkout was 1pm which is very nice. Check in is 3 which is standard -Fire pit was nice with a nice built in grate
Cons: -Ground is kind of awful. Mud and sand gets everywhere, it’s impossible to keep your tent clean, and it was very stick-y and rocky. It was extremely difficult to stake in our tent -Very small beach -Lake is not good for swimming. It’s very mucky and algae-y and just kinda gross -Kayak and canoe rentals were very expensive. $35 or $37 an hour for a kayak I think? You’re better off going to the Wisconsin river or devils lake for that unless they’ve raised their prices too -Firewood was $7 and not split well. Go to a nearby gas station & get better bundles for $5 -People had their dogs off leashes everywhere. We were awoken at 5 am to a dog snuffling around the perimeter of our tent it was actually terrifying until I heard its collar jingle. Absolutely unacceptable, I cant imagine letting your dog wander into other people’s campsites while they’re still sleeping. Ridiculous -Animals will circle your tent all night long even if you have no food in it. It’s pretty freaky if you’re not used to it -Even after paying for the campsite, you still have to pay $30 for a parking pass which I think is stupid -Getting around the grounds is a bit of a learning curve. I actually printed out and laminated a couple maps and I highly recommend doing that so you don’t have to use your phone.
This is an okay campground but there were a couple things that were dealbreakers for me, including the ground situation and the isolation. Other may enjoy it, that’s why I put it as a pro, but as a novice camper and a girl who is still kind of afraid of the woods, it was unnerving how dark and creepy it was, I’ve also never seen so many huge spiders and beetles in my life, but again, I’m a scaredy cat so take this with a...
Read morePretty park, lots of green, trails are well groomed and easy to hike (even the "difficult" ones). Lake was pretty gross from algae but not something they can control.
I camped at site 99 and would not again. I chose it because it was further away from other sites. There's a walkway that leads to the bathrooms which is nice but in the middle of the night when people walk by be prepared for bright flashlights in your face-no one seemed to notice or care that there are tents with people in them.
Unlike most of the reviews, I appreciated rangers enforcing quiet hours. I'm not a buzz kill but you know they are strict because of the people who were loud and obnoxious and drunk- that's right we're back to middle school were all get punished for a few so don't blame the rangers for enforcement of rules. It's refreshing that a park actually enforces the rules; as a long time camper, I find it very frustrating when the people who are loud and obnoxious and drunk (into early am 1-2am) and there is no host or ranger around so they get away with it and keep doing it. (And I'm talking VERY loud, obnoxious and drunk- you're here to have a good time- despite alcohol not being allowed- so go for it by all means but have some basic human respect. Many times I've been camping and those who get frustrated are often not respectful in the mornings though quiet hours are over at 6am as they tend to be early risers with the disrespectful sleeping in...karma people!) Very simple: respect the rules even if you disagree-they're there for a reason.
Reason for 3 stars is because of the campground etiquette as well as not many places to sit by the lake that isn't a dock or boat launch. Very loud campground as well from freeway noise that continues all night. Ear plugs, eye mask and high tolerance are needed...
Read moreWe stayed at bluewater Bay. We arrived at night and the campsite felt secluded at first. In the daylight.... Not so much. Campsites were very close and there were walking path to neighboring campsites. It was still pretty quiet, we really didn't hear much from other campsites except a child's curious questions and a father desperately trying to get them to sleep.
The campsite we stayed at didn't have a lot of space but worked for what we needed it to. The office was a cute little area. They sell souvenirs that give back to state parks. The person that was working the office over the weekend was super nice, super helpful, and very welcoming.
The bathrooms were close, the pits were smelly and pretty unsanitary but if you need to go you need to go. They also had bathrooms with running water nearby. They were much more clean and didn't smell terrible.
Additionally, around our campsite were these plants that had seeds(not spikey) and such that stick to any kind of fabric. They also stick to animal fur and I spent quite a bit of time trying to pull them out of my long-haired dog. This was not fun. We should have brought his brush. They caused him little to no pain, however. So I'm not upset about it, just wasn't expecting it.
We walked down by the beach and it was kind of disappointing if I'm being honest. The smell from the pit bathrooms that are located there was the only thing we could smell. The water didn't look very clean to swim in. It was too cold anyway. They had a nice little playground there too. There are some areas over there animals are not allowed and we had my dog so we didn't get a...
