My friends and I have been coming to this beach for the past four or five years. Weโre all from Ohio and look forward to our visit at the beach. Itโs always clean, never very crowded, and we usually end up having a good time, which is why Iโm giving two stars instead of just one.
This year was different because one of my friends got a ticket from the Hamburg police for not having a permit. We have very obvious Ohio license plate and tags, so obviously out-of-towners. The only sign saying we needed a permit is tiny, faded, and half hidden. Weโve never encountered this problem before and weโre told by a very nice couple that we would have to buy a pass from either the snack bar or the fitness place above it. The same couple told us we were lucky we didnโt live there.
My ticketed friend has anxiety issues, and was a wound up mess for the rest of our trip. Why do you need a permit to go to a public beach? Why werenโt we given a warning ticket instead of having to pay? Why isnโt there a more obvious sign, or something saying where to buy a temporary permit?
Weโre all very angry about this, and will never come to this beach again. Sounds petty, sure, but that cop knew what he was doing by taking advantage of us and ticketing us. Easy way to make a...
ย ย ย Read moreI will never pay for a sticker here again. This is easily the worst beach in the area for swimming. The entire bottom of the swimming area is covered in large rocks (basketball sized) and several algae covered cinder blocks.
There is a small section (about 3 feet wide) of sand (that is also full of rocks and debris, just slightyl less) about 5 feet from shore. But before and after that it is very large, slippery and uneven stones.
In addition, the depth quickly rises. About 15 feet from shore id estimate at 3.5 ft deep, and about 20 ft from the shoreline is probably about 4.5 ft deep, steadily growing to over my head (im 5'11") before reaching the back of the swim zone.
Other beaches in the area (Wendt, Bennet, Evangola, Mickey Rats) are much more swimming friendly. The bottom of the swimming areas at those beaches seem to be much better maintained and are predominantly sandy throughout the swimming area, with child friendly depths well into the swim zones, as well as deeper areas for adults.
With how much time the spent hauling sand and building up the boat launch, how much money they collect from residents to use the beach, how attentive they are at raking the beach sand, you'd figure the swimming area would be better and a much...
