Lake Ronkonkoma Recreation Center — Attraction in Town of Islip

The story of the spirit of this lake makes it one of the most terrifying places in America--if you're a man, DON'T swim in this lake. Princess Ronkonkoma was an indian maiden who fell in love with a white settler in the area. When her father found out she was with a round-eyes he forbade her to ever see him again. Years of pain and sorrow later, she took her own life in this lake, cursing it. One man would drown in this lake every year. Or that's how the story goes. Freaking awesome beach! beautiful scenery! The geese at the beach were friendly also we thought they were going to get aggressive with us but they actually were friendly! The water was awesome and gorgeous! So many people told us not to go in the water because was contaminated with algae and nitrogen and was so angry to hear that from the people decided to call the main office at beach they said they test it every day for contamination but will still not convinced that water was safe because of what google says about the beach...

Not the cleanest place, nor the prettiest, but it's not terrible either. Seems that more than 3/4 of the beach areas are either private or require a resident permit (and/or fee? Forgot how much it was.). Some of the areas are downright ugly though, they used old broken salvaged sidewalks to create rocky areas and there's no shortage of random garbage strewn about. But otherwise, I guess...
