Root Glen is a unique arboretum and great place for a walk located on the campus of Hamilton College. Root Glen was developed by the Root family beginning in 1850 and maintained by the same family for three generations. What can be seen here today is the result of years of work and planning. The walking paths here are made from red shale, are easy to follow, and add to the beauty of the natural surroundings. The paths all connect together and go in a circular pattern. The bridges over the stream add to the surroundings. There are some other trails which connect to the glen in the woods nearby. There was no signs indicating where those trails lead. In many ways Root Glen is a mix of a nice hike in the woods and a stroll through a botanical garden. It offers a bit of nature, peace, and serenity. Best of all it is free to all. Parking for Root Glen is near the Hamilton College Admissions Office. After walking Root Glen, be sure to take in the nearby Hamilton College campus as well. The college is historic and has...
Read moreWhile being surprised that there was nobody on these trails when I visited, I also couldnt believe that I have never been here before or have not heard of it. Bridges, trees and flowers were not lacking. There are 65 species of trees here with each having a foot note and label for people to enjoy. The streams, bridges and variety of diverse plant life will make you feel you are in japan, the jungle, and in the jurrasic period. On top of it all everything is extremely well manicured and consideration is taken to keep it in balance with the ecosystem. The walk is a breeze so definately visit this place if you enjoy hiking, nature, gardening and biodiversity. Parking is actually up the street a driveway or two and there are many more places to park. The map marker is the wrong place for parking to...
