A Forgotten Ghost Town in the Adirondacks is One of New York’s Creepiest Fall Destinations — And You Can Visit During Halloween Season

I love it because it is one of those little-visited corners of the Adirondacks that are becoming increasingly rare. If I make it to retirement I want to do the most popular of the High Peaks coming in from the backdoor here at Towhas. The history of the furnace is an amazing one, the notion that a place so remote and inaccessible could become a successful enterprise required folks with an unbelievable amount of conviction. I'm sad for those humans but glad they left us these monuments.

Super cool experience! It was well worth the detour (and getting drenched during a summer storm) to visit and read the history. The road is paved but remote, and quite a ways off the main road to get to the furnace, and then beyond to the town (to the walking path through Tahawus)

This is a very cool very large ironworks with a cool view of a small gorge. Definitely worth a stop on your way up to the ghost town. Plug this address into your phone instead of Tahawus as it'll take you to private property and a closed road. If you cross a bridge you've gone too far. Turn around and take the other road immediately before the bridge. There's plenty of signage explaining the history and use of the area. About a 3 hour drive from Watertown but beautiful and worth it. The road up is a little rough but I was able to do it in my Altima. There are also bathrooms up by the road by the parking for...
