**When you can combine a little history with an adventure it’s a win win situation for yourself and your children. Teach them, show them, let them experience it by exploring in person. Especially considering history is being rewritten each day. Eventually the “old” history will become nothing but ashes in the ground.
Upper Works; The McIntyre Blast Furnace and Adirondac, an Abandoned Mining Village. Adirondac was a major iron ore mining and smelting site. Difficulties mining the ore because of impurities (unknown at the time, it was titanium) and the transportation logistics of the remote Adirondack wilderness eventually caused the mine to close. What is labeled as Tahawus on the current map is an empty field at this point-the titanium mill that processed tens of millions tons of ore was demolished many years ago. Whatever ruins remain are around this parking lot - the pictures you see online are all taken within 500 yards of the parking area. So if you’re here for the ghost town this is the place! On the way up to this location there is an old furnace from the period when they tried to produce iron and failed because there was a large titanium impurity in the iron ore! The furnace is clearly labeled by the State and on Google Maps so you could not miss it, as opposed to this location.
