I’ve been attending Long Island Islamic Center for some time, and while I appreciate the opportunity to pray and gather with the community, I feel there are some serious concerns that need to be addressed.
One major issue is the mixing of genders near the entrance and in common areas. This creates unnecessary interaction between men and women, which goes against the traditional adab (etiquette) of the masjid. It’s important that the masjid maintain the sanctity and spiritual focus it is meant to offer.
In addition, I’ve noticed a lack of enforcement when it comes to appropriate dress, particularly among some of the younger female attendees. The masjid should gently remind and educate about the importance of modesty and Islamic guidelines in both behavior and attire. A separate entrance for women would help uphold this standard and provide them with the comfort and privacy they deserve.
Lastly, I feel the management team should reflect more on their responsibilities, not just in name, but through action and leadership grounded in Islamic principles—not cultural or modern innovations that stray...
Read morePlease improve audibility (volume is always low in the sister's prayer area, especially during lectures) There should be a separate area for sisters who are exempt from praying and an additional area for kids & parents. Alhamdulillah since this mosque has space, improving the layout of prayer spaces and integrating more aspects of Sunnah should not be difficult. This is an academic institution for many, allowing parents to be in a separate area with their kids will facilitate students to focus during lectures and khudbas [sermons]. Similarly, creating a space where sisters who are exempt from praying can sit and attend lectures will allow learning - especially for those who educate others. Please improve accessibility (mobility/ramps are great but moving around inside the mosque is a bit difficult) I could not find a wheelchair accessible wudu area. Terrifying that gender separation during events is taken so lightly…
Blessings: Remarkably peaceful Academic and spiritual support provided by scholars Lectures are remarkably thorough and includes...
Read moreSHOCKING TREATMENT DURING GRANDPA'S JANAZA My grandfather passed Monday morning. Instead of community support, we faced hostility and humiliation from the committee. WHAT HAPPENED:
ZERO COMPASSION - Cold, dismissive from the start REFUSED HELP - Denied our offers to pay extra or perform ghusl ourselves FORCED DELAY - Said volunteers only available after 5pm, kept body refrigerated overnight until 10am next day DENIED RIGHTS - Arrogantly refused humble request from my chacha (uncle) to lead janaza prayer MOCKED US - Committee members LAUGHED while we grieved and tried to discuss concerns POWER ABUSE - Used authority to bully a grieving family
RESULT: No Islamic adab or basic humanity during our darkest hour. WARNING: This committee shows shocking disrespect to grieving Muslims. Have backup plans ready. BOTTOM LINE: Masjids should comfort families in loss. This one failed completely. Choose elsewhere for dignity and Islamic values. May Allah guide them to better treatment of...
