Long Island has got to get over this insane practice of designating all its parks and other outdoor facilities “residents only”, as if those patches of beautiful land that weren’t paved over and covered in houses and landscaping of sometimes-questionable taste are simply the property of those of you who pay property taxes there. When you come to the city, do you find any of our parks designated “City of New York – Residents Only”? No, you don’t. You’re welcome in Astoria Park anytime if you’re in my neck of the woods, and god knows you make ample use of Central Park and everywhere else in Manhattan and beyond. Hell, we don’t even make you get a permit to park your car when you’re in the city, including in residential neighborhoods!
They don’t do this in Westchester or Rockland either, or anywhere in New Jersey that I’m aware of. Only in the insufferably stuffy precincts of Fairfield County, CT, have I seen this practice, other than on Long Island.
So please, stop shutting people out; it’s not the 1950s anymore, and it makes you look like troglodytes who are afraid of outsiders—and I’m NOT one of those people who hates on Long Islanders, because I know plenty of you and you’re human beings just like everyone else; I’m just asking you to reconsider this practice. It’s undignified, and it’s...

Read moreI came across tobay beach because jones beach field 6 parking was full. I drove up and blurted out "this is our first time here" sounding really excited. The lady at the entrance said this is a "private beach for residents only and proceeded to say jones beach fields 4 and 5 are open. I'm sharing this review because I feel like she was being biased towards my family and I. Yes, it maybe a private beach with a discounted rate for residents but there is a $30 fee for non-residents. Which I would've paid without a problem. So with that being said there should be signage stating it's a private beach for residents only. I wouldn't have bothered to drive up to only be turned away. And I only know of the $30 non-residential because I decided to Google it...
