This is an idyllic spot to visit and admire the view and wildlife in the center of Southampton Village. Resident mallards, snow geese, black ducks, turtles, gulls, and birds enjoy their year-round habitat. At night you can also spot a family of deer stopping by too. During specific times in the summer, you may be treated to a boat ride on the lake. Originally this upgrade was added to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of Pyrrhus Concer's birth, the first to ferry people across Lake Agawam from the Village to the Beach. Back then it cost only 10 cents per ride. When offered now you take a round trip ride only. Situated at the north end of the lake is Agawam Park housing an excellent playground for children. The grounds are maintained, and water access is fenced off. There are restroom and water fountain facilities here as well as a picnic area with tables. There is a meaningful War Memorial here listing the name of 325 Southampton residents as well as other encryptions that make this an excellent spot to reflect upon those who sacrifice to protect our freedoms and lives. In the warmer months, there are numerous events like concerts in the park, art shows, and Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veteran Day services open to the public, often drawing good crowds. I first came here as a child feeding the ducks, playing in the sandbox then as a young adult coming here with him and then our children to repeat these cherished moments. Now, we begin with a favorite bakery item and share it with the ducks and hope maybe one day we too will be blessed to see a grandchild play here. If not, we will continue to enjoy Lake Agawam and all the wildlife, including the sounds of giggles and squeals from the playground between the honks and quacks. After all, it is all music...
