A Natural Wonder in the Heart of Douglas County

Nestled in the serene landscapes of Superior, Wisconsin, Big Manitou Falls is a testament to nature's raw beauty and power. My recent visit was nothing short of magical, went there to film some videos from my YouTube channel, transforming a regular day into a memorable adventure.

Scenic Beauty: The trail leading to the falls is a journey through a lush forest, primarily dominated by towering pine trees that filter sunlight in a mesmerizing pattern across the path. Each step felt like walking through a living tapestry of green, with the occasional glimpse of wildlife adding to the wilderness experience.

The Falls: Big Manitou Falls itself is a spectacle. The water cascades down in multiple tiers, creating a symphony of sound that resonates through the valley. Watching the water dance over the rocks, catching the light in a thousand different ways, was a visual feast. The technical aspect of how the water flows, splits, and rejoins over the natural stone formations is fascinating, offering a lesson in fluid dynamics in the most picturesque setting.

Experience: Beyond the visual appeal, the atmosphere around the falls invites contemplation. It's a perfect spot to sit, breathe in the fresh air, and let the sound of the falls wash away the noise of everyday life. For those interested in astrophotography or simply gazing at the stars, the falls could also serve as an excellent base for viewing the northern lights, assuming the skies are clear and conditions are right.

Trails: The trails are well-maintained, providing a safe yet adventurous hike suitable for various levels of fitness. Each turn offers a new perspective of the surrounding nature, making the hike as rewarding as reaching the falls itself.

Overall: Big Manitou Falls is not just a destination; it's an experience. Whether you're there for the hike, the photography, or simply to reconnect with nature, this place delivers on all fronts. The blend of natural beauty, the serene environment, and the sheer power of the falls make it a must-visit in Douglas County, Wisconsin. Highly recommended for anyone looking to escape the mundane and touch...

Wisconsin's tallest waterfall, and the U.S.'s fourth highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. This masterpiece of nature comes in at just two feet shy of Niagra Falls, 165 ft. (though faaaar less wide, lol).

We came at an extremely opportune time. The amount of water flowing was not a deluge, nor a trickle. It was just right to see the rocks and various patterns the water makes as it works its way down. Very picturesque, the fading daylight made it look almost like a moving oil painting.

Unfortunately, you're not allowed to play around in the gorge anymore (maybe never were). I understand the safety concerns, a fall here is going to cause serious damage or death. I can vaguely remember thirtysomeodd years ago standing on the rock at the edge of the top of the falls looking down, and climbing down to the bottom standing on the rocks directly in front of the falls in the middle of the river looking up. I don't remember signs saying it wasn't allowed back then, but it could simply be that we were rebellious (stupid) kids that didn't care to follow the rules. I wish I still had the pictures from that excursion (taken with the old, yellow disposable cameras, if I recall correctly. We didn't have digital yet back in those days).

There is a small park area here with picnic tables (I don't believe there were grills at this location, but I could be mistaken) and a restroom. There are several areas on both sides of the river to get some fantastic views of the falls, and there is a hiking trail that leads down to the river (does not lead to the bottom of the falls).

A winding stairway leading down, so that people could stand on the beach and those rocks at the bottom would be an awesome addition.

Well worth traveling to, this is one of the top destinations in our state that everyone should see at least once. Be sure to check out Little Manitou and all the falls at Amnicon while you're...

Big Manitou Falls is nothing short of magical. Nestled in the heart of Wisconsin, this waterfall is a true gem. The sound of cascading water creates an anticipation that was met with sheer awe upon arrival.

The falls, with their powerful rush and misty aura, are a testament to nature’s grandeur. The viewing platforms provided breathtaking panoramas, allowing me to fully absorb the spectacle. Surrounded by lush greenery and the melody of nature, I felt an overwhelming sense of tranquility.

What impressed me most was the well-maintained network of hiking trails. These paths not only led me to the falls but also revealed the beauty of the surrounding wilderness.

Whether you’re an avid hiker, a photography enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Big Manitou Falls has something to offer. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, and every moment is a reminder of how...
