This is a shorter fire tower hike but has a decent amount of elevation gain. This makes for two sections in particular that are real burners. However, no scrambling. Just steep bits.
We were up and back in less than 75 minutes, including climbing the tower, taking some pictures, and exploring the prehistoric cave looking rock formation. It's really just a crevice but it looks really cool.
The tower itself is not evident on the approach and you can't really see any mountains to speak of, so it's neat to get to the top and see why it was used for a fire tower.
The top has a vista even if the tower isn't open and there are a lot of little side trails to other areas that we didn't explore but were visible from the tower. It's confusing if you don't keep track of which path actually goes back...
Read moreCompleted this hike on June 7, 2019. The trail is relatively short, but begins climbing almost right from the lot. It's a steady climb all the way to the old fire tower. On June 7 the trail was fairly muddy, so hiking boots are strongly suggested. The bugs are out in force too, we were swarmed from the lot all the way to the fire tower and back. They were relentless, so repellant and protective net jackets/hoods, as well as pants/long sleeve shirr are recommended. Once we reached the well maintained tower, we were happy to see the beautiful 360 degree view of the Adirondack forests and mountains. We would have stayed longer to soak in the scenery, but the bugs ensured our stay was short. Would do this trail again ( when the...
Read moreWe tried this two days in a row. The first day we were turned back by an unexpected thunderstorm about 80% of the way up. It's rough going in the rain with slippery rock and mud. However, we made it day two. It was still a little more difficult than the "easy" rating it has been given, due to a still mucky trail and warmer than average temps, but sure lives up to the hype when you get to the top. The work done to improve it is well thought out and both effective long term and suits the location, well done. In the 4 or so hour visit, we only encountered 6 or 7 people (one dog) reach of the days.
Simply put, it's well...
