I actually used to live here as a child when my father was still in the Coast Guard. K9 Keeper was our family dog. There's an old haunted tale about the light house as well. When I was younger, it was just my mother and younger brother home. The family that lived next door (there were 2 houses at the time) was not home. Two workers came to either both replace the light and paint up in that area or just to paint. Either way, there are only 2 keys to access the top of the light house; The Keeper has 1 and the workers have the other. Again, the family was out of town and I was roughly maybe 5 or so (could be wrong about the age.) The workers left for day one time, locking everything up, the next day they came back they asked my mum which one us got in. She said neither as they are to young to even reach that area, but we don't have either of the 2 keys to get in. Well, when the workers came back that day the paint that they locked up top in the light area, wasn't the bottom of the stairs all spilled, with a few shoe prints going back up the stairs to that locked door.
Another fun story, for Christmas time they had someone dressed as Santa show up in a helicopter once. I'll have to ask my mum more about that since all I recall...
Read moreMany thanks to the folks at Harbor Light who were kind enough to stay open for just one last tour! It was our first lighthouse on our Cape Cod trip and, fun fact, was the only one in the area you didn't have to hike to. I appreciated that immensely. This is such a stories light house; the first on Cape Cod, manned for so many years, visited by Thoreau, all 400 plus tons moved in the 90s because erosion takes 3-18 feet of land off a year. It was an excellent light house and a lovely bunch of people Manning it for tourists. I interestingly it's a full size lighthouse on a full size golf course which my wife and I found amusing because we are mini golf fans and there's always a mini lighthouse on the course. Also, for the "The Greatest Showman" fan in your life, there is a 70 foot stone tower nearby that was brought over from P. T. Barnum that Jenny Lind sang from. It was bought, transported, and erected again stone by stone by a rich guy with one heck of a crush. Easy to get to, pleasant tour guides, and a storied history make this a...
Read moreA visit to Highland Lighthouse is an absolute must-do on any Cape Cod itinerary. The location, perched on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic, is simply breathtaking. Taking a tour of the lighthouse is a fantastic experience—the guides are knowledgeable and passionate, and the climb to the top offers incredible panoramic views of the ocean and the surrounding Cape Cod National Seashore. The history of the lighthouse and the stories of its keepers are fascinating and really bring the place to life. We also made sure to walk down to the observation deck. While the view from there is somewhat limited due to the growth of the shrubs and dunes, it still offers a lovely perspective of the dramatic coastline. It's a great spot for a photo and a quiet moment of reflection. The proximity to the Cape Cod National Seashore makes it easy to combine a lighthouse tour with a scenic walk or a relaxing afternoon on the beach. Highland Lighthouse is more than just a landmark; it’s a beautiful piece of history in a stunning...
