Looking out at the scenery heading up from Vernal to do some rafting on the Green River, I noticed some red sandstone colored trails off to the right. The following morning I drove up highway 191 and parked on the side of Donkey Flat Rd. for a trail run.
Clearly, the trails were mostly used by mountain bikes. My footprints were the only ones left in the sandstone powder, although I did come across a couple of nice dinosaur tracks on a rock part of the trail. Initially, as the trails generally rose, there were lots of ups and downs that would surely be fun on a bike. The narrow path was somewhat U-shaped in its cross section from bike traffic, making it tougher to run. As the trail rose closer to the first "ship" of the red fleet the trail was wider and rockier, and more suitable for running.
As the temperature was forecasted to reach 100 degrees, I was content to head back down after about 2 1/2 miles of climbing. My impression is that there are plenty of other trails to explore. I don't believe I was even technically in the park. I did not see another runner or hiker, but only one lone...
Read moreGreat little reservoir to spend the day on. I’d recommend camping at nearby Steinaker state park though. We decided to book our trip that way based on what the campground looks like online and am sure glad we did. The camping here at Red Fleet is akin to sleeping in a Walmart parking lot. Rows of paved stalls packed together like sardines. Not sure what the thought process was there. The lake on the other hand was amazing. We spent two days here exploring. The first day we hiked in from the backside to the dinosaur tracks. Wear your swimsuit if you do. There’s a great spot to jump in the water at the end of the hike. The second day we brought our paddle boards back and launched them from the boat launch. We spent the day exploring the lake. The water even though very low was still cool and clear. As others have said it’s kind of like a mini lake Powell. We...
Read moreBeautiful tinny reservoir. Warm water in August-September when we went. Very tiny. Great for paddle boarding, cliff jumping, etc. but I wouldn't recommend draging a boat there. Its tinny and very few to no beaches. you can access it from the Marina or a few other dirt roads, but with a long walk to the beach. The campsite hosts and DNR people there are super wonderful, happy, amazing people. I don't like people. But I really liked everyone I meet and talked too. We don't usually do parking lot camping. But it was still a lot of fun. If you could somehow camp on near the lake I would give it 5 stars. But lake access is not great. Lack of beaches further complicated that. However it's also part of what made it so...
