The open-air museum in Nevada City and the train were closed yesterday (June 17, 2014), so we tried today. Closed AGAIN! Due to "weather" the rumor was up in Virginia City, where the merchants were getting hot under the collar at this asinine move on the State's part.
People drive from all over the state and country to visit VC and NC. Why in the world would you close the museum and the train?! Of course it's cold. Of course it's raining. Of course there's sleet and snow. THIS IS SUMMER IN MONTANA!!! If it's a staffing problem, open up the gates and let us in on the honor system. Letting a few people in for free is better than disappointing every single person who made the trip to visit the museum.
If you don't maintain consistent hours, tourists and locals alike are going to lose interest and head to Bannack or the Museum of the Rockies instead for a reliable experience.
The powers-that-be should be ashamed of themselves for this stunt! Here's hoping they can get it together. And if they can't, perhaps Helena should reconsider the people they put in charge of running the open-air...
