Do yourself a favor, and park at the EAST Trailhead, unless you are in good shape. It's a fairly steep walk down to the cave, it's at least a mile, and coming back is a steep uphill walk. The West Trailhead is a flat gentle half mile walk to the tunnel. I walked the full trail, from west trailhead to east trailhead and back, so it ended up being about 4 miles, and that last mile was uphill. There are portapotties at both trailheads, and benches to sit along the trail. The trail is very well maintained, I highly recommend this experience. Don't forget to bring a flashlight! The trail is well-marked, with clear and visible signs that make navigation easy. Mile markers along the way help track progress, which I appreciated.
Overall, it’s a well-maintained and organized trailhead, making for a smooth start (and finish)...
Read moreGreat hiking/history adventure! We parked in the East Trail lot. (8 spaces) Easy walk down, but straight uphill coming back. Park in the West lot for easy in and out. (20 + spaces) At first glance into the tunnel, seeing the light at the other end, it appeared to be a short walk. Not so! It was an hour walk, one way. Be sure to have adequate light. It is super dark! I wore a head lamp and a carried a handheld light. The paved walkway is wide enough for passing returning hikers, but does have a grade at both sides to allow for drainage of water flow inside the tunnel. There's lots of signage giving a history...
