This place was OK, but I doubt that I will choose to stay there again. I picked this place because of its proximity to Rockfish Gap. I helped a friend who also stayed here get started on the Appalachian Trail, to through-hike (flip flop), heading north from Rockfish Gap. The place is nice enough, but it has no on-site staff and no restaurant, and there is none within walking distance. So, we ended up driving into Waynesboro to eat both Dinner and Breakfast. It would have been simpler to stay at a (probably nicer) place in Waynesboro that is closer to restaurants and drive up to the AT in the morning.
On the plus side, on-line reservation and contactless check-in was very convenient, and in my opinion, the place is reasonably priced.
When I checked into my ground floor room in the south wing, the AC was set to 62 degrees. It took a while for the little window AC/heater unit to warm up the room, and the floor stayed very cold the whole time. (If you stay here October-April, I'd recommend bringing slippers, night-socks, etc.) Also, after I set the AC to 68 degrees, it kept coming on (kinda loud) every 30 minutes or so, to warm the room back up, all night long -- this was not my most restful night.
There is a little store where you can get over-priced convenience items, but it's obvious they make up for the lack of on-site staff with on-site video surveillance, and this felt a little creepy, though I should probably be used to it by now since it's everywhere.
Also on the plus-side, if you are hiking the Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail with friends, this is the perfect place to be -- you can park one car at the eastern terminus, drive a second car back to the hotel and walk to the western trailhead across the street from the hotel, down the access trail, through the tunnel, and out to your other car -- very easy; about 2.8 miles total,...
Read moreMy wife and I live about 2 hours away and we come up a few times a year to visit family and hike around Shenandoah National Park. This was our first trip where we stayed at the Grey Pine Lodge. She booked the room, after several trips of staying in and around Waynesboro VA, in the commercial hotel offerings.
The location of the Grey Pine is great. It saves us 15 minutes of drive time each way to the Park, and being close to the Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail.
The Lodge is slightly pricier than hotels in town, but for the location it is probably worth it for either the Blue Ridge Parkway or Shenandoah National Park. The room was clean, with very little else besides a bed and a small table/chair. No lounge chair or anything else, which was fine. The bathroom was clean, the only thing we noticed was that there was no hand soap provided in the bathroom. Not a big deal, maybe it was missed or maybe you have to bring your own.
We were in a room on the end closest he road, which at times can be busy. The noise was minimal once in the room.
The only con we could speak of was that the AC unit was a bit quirky. We couldn’t seem to adjust it to stay in one “mode” the whole time, and it was either very cold or muggy in the room because of this. It also was blinking a light as well. (I think that The filter looked a bit dirty, so maybe that had something to do with it) Reading some other reviews, it seems like the AC units are a bit quirky for others as well.
The fire pits and string lights are neat, I would recommend bringing your own chairs if you want to light a fire, as there are only a few Adirondack style chairs to use, and our first night another family had all 3 at their firepit, so we used our camping chairs.
All in all, a nice place to stay. We would definitely consider staying there during our spring and fall trips up to the...
Read moreThis is a renovated motel and they did a really great job with it! The location is perfect as well. Very well located to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the AT, Waynesboro and right in between Charlottesville and Staunton.
It was quiet and we really liked what they did in the front with the fire pits, picnic tables, chairs and outdoor lights.
They are pet friendly, which is extremely helpful. There is an extra fee for pets, so you just need to let them know ahead of time so that they can put you in the correct pet friendly room. They do have a dog poop station, which was nice, except that it's obviously been out of poop bags for quite some time because a bird has built a nest in it.
The room was a good size and well renovated. Good lighting, a flat screen TV, a mini fridge and microwave. The air conditioner took some getting used to because it keeps going on and off all night. I finally got up and messed with it and found a "Sleep" option which then just kept it on all night. That was very helpful, with the exception of the fact that it didn't keep it cooled to the temperature we set it at. I think that's why they installed a ceiling fan over the bed.
The bathroom is small, but nicely renovated. The only issue in there was that they either put the shower rod too low or chose a shower curtain that was too long, because there is too much of it at the bottom and it all comes into the shower with you. That could easily be fixed though.
I liked that you can just communicate via text if you need anything instead of it being manned on site. They have a separate code for The Pine Shop, which is where you'll find complimentary coffee, tea and a water/ice filter. They have snacks and various sundries in there for purchase also.
Overall, a good find for the price...
