Stony Man Mountain Overlook is a wonderful stop along Skyline Drive. It’s very easy to reach by car, with parking right by the overlook, so you don’t need to hike to enjoy the beautiful view. From here you can see the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains stretching out into the horizon, and on a clear day the scenery is absolutely stunning. It’s a peaceful spot to take photos, enjoy a break from driving, and just breathe in the fresh mountain air. Definitely one of the highlights of Skyline Drive.

Skyline Drive itself is a scenic route, and Stony Man is one of many overlooks where you can pull over and enjoy the view. The overlook has enough space for cars, rocks where people can sit, and open areas to stand and take pictures. The sky above feels wide and clear, and the mountains look endless, creating a calm atmosphere. I went pretty quickly was able to get to the junction where the two trails (little stony man view + stony man summit) dissect in about 7 minutes. It took about another 2 minutes for me to get to the little stony man view. I spent about 5 minutes there and decided that Stony Man summit has probably better views.
It took another 2 minutes to get back the to junction and I went my way toward the summit. Probably within 3 minutes on the trail I heard something and I spotted a bear; I think a cub too. I decided to not try and risk it or wait so I went back.
I was pretty surprised that a bear would be present in the humid and hot July weather, but I guess I learned something new.
