Today was my first time visiting this beautiful park. It's a little wild and the trails are filled with adventure, which is amazing. The river is close by and many of the side trails end up there. I enjoyed finding the many waterfalls along the trails, and since it has been a dry summer, they were not very strong, but still cool to enjoy.
My biggest issue with the park is the trail marking system. The official map on the website is very vague – with no numbers on the trails. There was a map posted at the parking area that was a little more descriptive (with numbers), and I ran across some folks who had found a color version somewhere. (There were not any maps at the trailheads that I could find.) In any event, om the trails, the marking system was a nightmare. Most of the trails had no marking except an occasional post with arrows, and random placement of numbered trails. There were plenty of no hiking and no horseback riding icons to be found, but very few indications of what trail you were actually on. At one intersection, I came across a post that had three arrows pointing to three trails. Yeah, ok... thanks for that. Several of the trails had caution tape where there had been some wash outs. There were so many side trails that honestly it was hard to figure out where I was and if I was even supposed to be on those trails. (There was a sign at the trailhead that indicated you were supposed to stay on marked trails only or face the consequences.)
It was definitely an adventure, and despite not knowing where I was half the time, I had a lot of fun exploring. Sometimes it is fun to wander and explore without a map, but in an emergency situation, it would be good to have a better marking system so you could communicate your location more clearly.
Other than that, I loved it and will definitely come back. There are some areas that feel like middle earth....
Read moreThe State Forest had been a part of my life for 40 years. It is nearly my back yard and I love it there. There is much more to the Forest than the waterfall and camping areas. Take a hike into the woods and get away from all the problems in our lifes.. take off down the hors trails to start your adventure... then turn off into the wilderness. No people and trails. Just you and nature. Don't get lost of course... I know the forest well and it can become disorienting so keep...

There are nearly groomed horse trails and plenty of space as well as wooded trails to ride your horse or walk your dog. I enjoy walking the wooded trails down the bank with my mother sister and friend's down to the river. My mother, who is 95 was able to manage the trails so should work pretty well for youngster's too. Enjoy...
