Buttermilk Falls is a great day-trip waiting to happen for all adventurers! The falls themselves are very accessible, just park on the other side of the road and head on over to them! There is a staircase that leads to two separate viewpoints of the waterfall.
For hikers who walk up the steps, you can take the Buttermilk Falls trail up a steep, rocky incline. While there isn't much in the way of views, you'll do some cliffside hiking, and there's a field of dead trees that may pique your interest.
The real pay-off of the Buttermilk Falls trail is Crater Lake. When hiking up the Buttermilk Falls trail, take a right when the trail splits. Follow this easy path for about a mile and a half and Crater Lake will be on your left. It's a beautiful, vast lake for eating near, fishing in, and chillin' out. A great spot to stop for lunch or just to relax. Enjoy!
In all, Buttermilk Falls offers a little for everyone. Like hiking? Like nature? Like waterfalls? Buttermilk Falls has you covered. More into Weird NJ stuff? There are some abandoned homes and barns you can explore without fear of police intervention. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
P.S. - I've seen other reviews commenting on the decaying road. Don't take these reviews lightly! In one section the road had completely crumbled into a 5 ft ravine. Driving in a car can be unsafe, try to go in an SUV or truck if possible. Otherwise you might leave with some strange sounds coming from your...
Read moreIt’s literally a hike. Took about four hours to complete the loop from the falls. Steep first mile after the falls, but the rest of the trail is more forgiving. Use caution when it’s damp, the first leg of the trail before the circle loop has man rocks and can be slippery when wet
You can get to the top of the falls using the stairs but it is narrow and around 2pm when we were leaving, there was a lot more ppl taking random pics everywhere so use caution
I recommend hiking shoes for the trail. I can’t imagine being comfortable in my sneakers or trail running shoes doing this trail at all. However, if u r making the trip there just to see the falls, it’s a four mile total round trip walk from the parking spots listed below to the falls. Regular non hiking shoes are fine to walk from parking to the falls and back
PARKING!
Bit confusing on the parking because mountain road leading to the actual falls is closed. So you either have to park by the little lot by Walpack cemetery, just before mountain road or Hany Mill road, off of walpack flatbrook road or national park service road 615. Either approach is about two miles from the actual falls. Do not park in front of the “road closed sign”. They issue tickets to cars blocking that road closed sign. Got there at 8am on Sunday Labor Day and there was a handful of cars parked. So def...
Read moreBeautiful fall (even though it was not as full as I had expected) that is right there once you arrive without requiring any hiking or long walks. However, take caution when driving along the road to get there. Extremely bumpy with ditches and rocks that can scratch your car.
Behind the fall, there is a viewing platform that provides a different scenery. Nothing special. Steep stairs if you decide to go up to it. Past that is the hiking trail which we attempted. Not entirely sure the length of it, but we spent over an hour through the trail which can get very steep with fallen trees that you have to climb over. Not recommended for families with children or elderlies.
Lastly and the worst thing about it is that the road was closed leading out of the area (west bound on Mountain Rd). However, there was no indication of it and you won't realize until you drive there. So we had to go back and drive along the same road we took to get to the falls. Also, there are no restrooms by the fall. There are some along the road to get there that we saw.
Overall, decent experience. Maybe worth a few pictures, but nothing to...
