One of the best and most unique hiking trails in NJ. The Riverside Trail has got to be one of the coolest trails I've seen. "River side" is an understatement, nearly half of the trail runs directly over the river's rocky banks just inches from the water. It's extremely rocky in these sections, so much that you might need to use your hands and legs to climb over the rocks to avoid slipping and falling into the water.
The trail is extremely dog friendly, but you're gonna want a very very long leash so you and your dog have room to maneuver. A long long leash is also helpful to let the dogs swim in the river safely.
There's a bathroom at the start of the trail but it's currently closed for repairs. Instead there's two porta pots.
There's tons of benches for sitting, many of them stuck jutting out directly over the running river. Lots of places for picnic lunches as well.
There's a huge parking lot which gets surprisingly full, but I don't think anyone's likely to be lacking a place to park.
The full trail loop is in the ballpark of 2.5 - 3 miles long. Considering all the rocks, you may want to allow for extra time to cross.
Overall this is a really great trail to bring your friends and family and dogs and you'll have a lot...
Read moreI had a bad experience hiking when I was about 12. I had not been hiking since. Until today. The trails were easily marked and not too arduous. I probably would not have done it 50lbs. ago. But now? I still struggled. But I did not pass out or die. Cell reception is not optimal!
There was no soap in the ladies restroom so I'd recommend to bring your own. There was a water fountain, but no water. So again, bring your own. There was a vending machine there although we did not buy anything. We had planned on doing the pink trail which is .1 miles, but we were already there. We decided to do the red, which was .9 miles plus the white trail which is the main one. It took us about 2 hours mainly because of me. I'm a big girl and I was slower than the other women. But we did take plenty of pictures. Just incredibly beautiful place! We did encounter a woman who had broken her ankle on the rocks. Please wear proper attire and watch your step. There is plenty of shade and benches along the way. There are also grills for people on picnics. Lovely,...
Read moreVery nice park. Trails are well marked and kept pretty clear. Bathrooms were out of order (pending capital improvement grants according to signs posted), but they did have spot a pots in parking lot.
There are picnics tables scattered all throughout the trails. We need to look up why there are so many as it doesn't appear there would have been anywhere to set up a tent if camping was available at a certain point in time. But there are old broken water fountains around trails too. So we are curious as to why... or what used to go on there.
All in all, it was a cool trail. Most of it was pretty easy for people of all ages. And our 4 year old made the red trail through all the rocks without too much trouble considering his little legs. But you can easily map out and connect other trails to avoid the rocky area if you want to.
Definitely worth checking out for a...
