High Rock is an OK place to visit as long as you're there for the views of the landscape and the intermittent peace and quiet. Also, as long as you can ignore all of the graffiti on the rocks. Now, I'm not originally from this area, but after some research, I found that this particular rock formation has been here since prehistoric times, and then sometime around the 1800s it became a pretty popular tourist destination as an overlook. Then, in the 90s, it had a platform and was used as a spot for hang gliders to launch from. However, after 9/11, it was closed down due to the close proximity to Camp David and the new flight restrictions that were placed on the area. Since then, it has still been open for use as an overlook, but in my opinion, it has been ruined as a possible beautiful destination to take in the views and turned into some sort of as another reviewer put it Hellscape. Although I'm not sure why or how due to the fact that there is a gate on one side that could possibly be secured at particular times and a government restricted road on the other. Surprisingly enough, there is also a security camera up on a pole, too, that is ofcourse graffitied as well. So, all that being said, if you just want some good views of the far off landscape and some peace and quiet by all means stop by but if you're looking for a beautiful place to visit you might want to leave it off your list and...

High Rock is one of the best spots in Maryland to take in some breathtaking views⌠and even more breathtaking people-watching. You never know who (or what) youâre going to run into up here.
On any given day, you might find: ⢠Families just trying to enjoy nature while their kids throw Goldfish crackers off the cliff. ⢠A group of white-trash mountain people blasting Lynyrd Skynyrd from a Bluetooth speaker while shotgunning lukewarm Busch Lights. ⢠An army guy appearing out of nowhere from the woods like heâs respawning in a video game. ⢠A couple of dirty hippies playing a drum circle, probably debating whether they should climb down the rock face barefoot. ⢠A busload of tourists taking selfies while completely ignoring the fact that theyâre about three inches from falling to their doom.
The graffiti-covered rocks add a certain post-apocalyptic charm to the place, and if youâre lucky, you might witness some truly terrible attempts at parkour. Just rememberâthere are no safety rails, so if youâre clumsy, you might make the evening news.
All in all, 10/10 would visit againâjust for the...
Read moreA beautiful and scenic drive thru and hold spot. The last 10-15 min drive to this location is slightly off the road, but I was quite surprised that the roads are very neatly paved to reach here. You will only have to climb the stairs to click pictures or enjoy. Be very careful the top might be sticky or slippery at times because of the paint. You can still step until second last step for the view, you do not have to climb all the way on the top or if you are afraid of heights. Must visit if you are near Catoctin Mountains. One can literally relish the amazing horizon, picturesque greenery around. In the second picture, near to this place there is a park that we visited wherein there are lot of summer activities for everyone and trails for hikers. Important Note: Do not drive to this location during thunderstorm, heavy rain, snow storm/snow, etc (basically during any not normal sunny/cloudy day) because there are portion on this road wherein rocks can fall, roads might get slippery to off-shoulder your car and it will take a while for towing vehicle or help to reach you because of the kind of hilly...
