Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the refuge provided well-maintained and readily available bathrooms for visitors. The refuge provides an educational experience, with informative signage and dedicated staff who are passionate about sharing their knowledge. They are always willing to answer questions, making the visit both enjoyable and educational for individuals of all ages.
Another noteworthy aspect is the refuge's accessibility. The well-marked trails further enhance the experience, making it easy to navigate and explore the expansive natural surroundings. This accessibility ensures that all visitors, regardless of their physical abilities, can fully partake in the refuge's beauty and marvel at the diverse wildlife.

Read moreSteigerwald is finally open again and well worth the wait!!!!!!!!!!!!! Expansive , green , easy to navigate, great habitat for wildlife ---all descriptive words and phrases for the new and improved Steigerwald Lake Wildlife Refuge . A mid May trip to Steigerwald shortly after its early May 2022 reopening was totally worth the drive out to Washougal. Parking was at a premium on this mid-week day and probably will be difficult moving into the future as well. Only a few handicapped parking spaces available too. I am hoping the parking situation is a work-in-progress because there definitely needs to be more parking for this top shelf urban wildlife refuge moving into the summer season and beyond . The initial portion of the park along the raised levee has been totally redesigned. The raised levee provides for a great vantage point to overlook the refuge looking east. Visible are new plantings of small tree starts which provide cover and ground stabilizing effects for the levee areas Geese are running around with new goslings all over the refuge. Several other types of waterfowl are at home in the refuge and very visible at the viewing bridge across Redtail Lake and across Gibbons Creek. Turtles abound and were out in full force on this sunny Tuesday morning. Osprey nests are visible and adult osprey can be heard throughout Steigerwald. This is an amazing resource for birders and hikers and all people who enjoy communing with nature. Path along the levee is wide enough for wheelchairs. Be aware dogs are not allowed in the refuge. Bike riders should park and lock up bikes at the provided bike stands Missing were garbage receptacles???????? !! Final Take--GO! ...

This 6.8-mile roundtrip refuge has well kept trails through wetlands and riparian forest. This refuge is the Western gateway to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
You start at the Mountain View Trail from the parking lot, and from there you can branch out onto several other trails. It was cool to learn that this wildlife refuge is a part of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which includes also Franz Lake and Pierce Refuges. All of these are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. There is even a guided bird tour in both spring and fall that is led by a refuge volunteer. Check out their website for more information & dates of upcoming tours and how to register for one.
I want to say thank you to all of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife crew, including all the volunteers, who keep this refuge in excellent condition! 🙏🏼 Please do your part by following the rules and guidelines, which are clearly posted....
