I absolutely love this trail. The East Trailhead is our favorite entrance, especially with small kids. The path is wide, almost flat, and makes for an easy walk, which is perfect for families. On a hot day, reaching the tunnel entrance felt like a reward the rush of cold air pouring out was so refreshing and made the kids even more excited to go in.
The tunnel itself is incredible. Make sure you bring a flashlight, because once you’re inside it gets very dark. The ground can be wet and uneven in places, so be prepared for damp shoes. It’s such a unique experience walking through, and the history of the tunnel makes it even more interesting.
One of my kids’ favorite parts was standing outside the entrance while people were walking inside the echoes and sounds that carry through the tunnel are both amazing and a little eerie. It really adds to the adventure.
Overall, this trail is beautiful, well-maintained, and unlike anything else we’ve experienced. It’s a must-do if you’re in the area, and it’s great for families looking for something both fun...
Read moreWe began at the Western trail head in Waynesboro. We went at 2 PM on a Wed. It wasn’t busy, just a few people here and there. There is dedicated parking, but it is limited. Portable potties located at parking area. The hike to and from the tunnel on the West end does have a lot of elevation variation. This part of the hike is moderate with a good amount of uphill climbing from the tunnel back to your vehicle. You can feel the temperature drop as you get close to the entrance. At least a 20 degree difference in the tunnel, so you may want to bring a jacket or sweatshirt. The path is very well maintained, wide with crushed asphalt/gravel. Bring a headlamp or flashlight with you! The nearly 1 mile walk through the tunnel is smooth and easy. It was a dry day when we went with not much recent rain, and there were a few spots with some dripping water from above and water to the sides of the trail. We were glad we went on this hike!...
Read moreThe tunnel itself is amazing. Had the trip been made early in the morning or late in the evening, it definitely would have been a better time. Because of the sheer number of obnoxious people, however, my trip was ruined. Screaming, yelling, and flashing lights everywhere really obliterated the chance of a peaceful walk through a beautiful tunnel. Though I hate to see things like this monetized, the tunnel would be better enjoyed if there were guard stations at each end policing the number of people walking through at once. It was honestly horrible. I miss the days when no one knew about this place, and one could enjoy it peacefully. After today's trip, I can say those days are long gone. Heartbreaking and...
