I absolutely loved this trail. It follows the going to the sun road for a while and has incredible views. Get there early if your trying to get a parking spot and see the wildlife. I ran into some deer early in the AM they were walking the trail and were literally 20 feet from me when I came around a corner close to the chain area. The mom walked right passed me and the fawns when around a bit. There is an optional spur trail, not long before the chalet that leads to an overlook of grindal glacier, it’s only a mile up but it is very difficult easily the most challenging part of this trail by far, like a 900+ ft gain, but it’s pretty awesome if you make it to the top. At the chalet there is like 1 or 2 toilets, and you can either keep going or turn back. If you keep going it’s almost all downhill after that and you can hike down about 4 miles to “the spot” and take a free shuttle (check the schedule 1st) back to Logan pass. That’s what I ended up doing. The best views are between the chalet and Logan pass, but the hike down isn’t bad. The trail is fairly long but also fairly easy to hike with the exception of the glacier overlook. Note you will want to hike from Logan pass to the Spot NOT the other way around. While it is possible to start at the Spot I would not recommend it, unless your one of those people who are trying to challenge yourself, and you know who you are so in that case you do you. But it’s a 3000 ft gain from the spot to the chalet, a steep 4 mile climb and another 1000+ ft gain to Logan pass from there, not to mention the glacier overlook. So just be aware it’s much more challenging to hike it that way. I did see a couple small groups powering through it though. Any way you decide to hike this trail it’s sure to be spectacular, best trail in...

Panoramic views like I’ve never seen before - all throughout the trail. We were lucky the weather was perfect. Mostly cloudy, so we weren’t beat down by the sun, and on the cooler side - probably around high 50s/low 60s. Montana wildflowers are fully present during the summer months (late August for us) and it really brings all the colors together. We made it all the way to the valley near Haystack Butte, but had to turn around because we were a large group with various degrees of fitness. We did, however, hiked 8 miles in total, start and end near Logan’s Pass, gained around 1000 feet elevation, and finished just short of 4 hours including breaks and a short lunch. I’d like to go back and hike to Grinnel Glacier overlook. This was the most amazing hike I’ve ever done. Prepare for wild weather and a long day. Hydrate and wear comfortable...

Roughly 14 mile hike from Logan Pass to the Loop including the Grinnell Glacier overlook. It is strenuous. Grinnell glacier overlook is an out-and-back spur off the main trail that ascends 900ft in .8 miles... then you have to come back down and begin a fairly steady ascent to the Granite Park Chalet. Good place to rest, buy additional water, Gatorade, snacks. Then begins what is, in my opinion, the toughest part of the hike...a 4 mile decent to the loop that is brutal on the knees. Descending sounds easy, it most definitely is not. It is STEEP and uneven. Bring your hiking poles, they saved me. And don't believe google maps estimated time to traverse this. Took us 11hrs to complete this 14 mile hike with sufficient rest breaks, lunch, etc. Start early, it will also help...

The Highline Trail📍 Glacier has some of the most spectacular hiking trails of any national park, and the Highline Trail is no exception. You can start the trail at two different points, but we’d recommend starting at Logan Pass for the best views right off the bat. To save yourself a lot of parking anxiety (and the need for a vehicle reservation), you can take the hikers’ shuttle bus and get dropped off at the Logan Pass Visitor Center, close to the trailhead. The entire trail is about 12 miles one way, but a lot of hikers go out a few miles and then turn round. Glacier is grizzly country, so be sure to carry bear spray with you, and have it easily accessible. What’s your favorite hike in Glacier?

Personally, I like my grizzlies at a distance. A far distance! This bear had actually been up on the trail we were hiking (the Highline Trail), and started to make its way down. Someone pointed it out to us, so we stopped to watch it for a while with our binoculars. After a few minutes, we realized it was headed straight for some people! You can see at least one guy on the left edge of the frame (halfway down, btwn the trees). Thankfully, they saw it, but I’m not sure waiting as long as they did to leave was a good idea. The ground that bear covered in such a short amount of time was insane! When the bear got to the road, someone blew an air horn, and that scared it away. It wasn’t bothered by people at all. It didn’t end there though…we were a bit wary on the hike back knowing there had been a grizzly in the area. For a long stretch we didn’t see ANYONE coming the other way. It turns out a grizzly was right on the trail a quarter mile up ahead and it followed a group for 15-20 min! They were super freaked out showed us the video. Wild stuff!! With Highline being the most popular trail in Glacier, I wasn’t expecting much wildlife. I was wrong! Take this as a reminder to be bear aware. We actually ended up adopting a few other hikers who didn’t have bear spray. Always hike prepared people!
