This is a beautiful, historical place. There is a quiet reverence to the area. The first time we stopped we were traveling home (north) from the Carolina’s when I just happened to see a sign for the historical battleground; since then, we’ve returned to Summersville twice to visit Carnifex. The views of the valley traveling the short distance through the countryside to reach the battle site are stunning. There is a lovely picnic area and the trail through the woods is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. I like to visit during holidays that pay tribute to our veterans and honor the young men who lost their lives - on both sides.

Very well maintained park and historical area. Large playground for the kids, sand volleyball, baseball field, several horseshoe pits, and large shelters. Several of the shelters have water/sinks for cooking and cleaning up. Historical houses and structures can be toured during daylight hours. Trails run along the Gauley River rim with several overlooks down to the river. Close to Summersville Dam and other recreation areas.

We walked one of the trails to see the pillow rock falls - Class V Rapids...we did a guided rafting trip last summer and wanted to just hike the trails and experience the rapids from a view from the top - This was the perfect place! If you go at the right time you can watch rafters try and make their way down the falls. The park is beautiful and well maintained. I would 10/10 recommend stopping here!

Good place to go for a hike, family or group picnic. They usually hold a reenactment of the battle I am thinking every other year, with a pretty good turnout. The grounds are very well maintained along with the various trails. They have plenty of parking, a playground area for the kids, a beautiful overlook of the Gauley River. The house that sets on the property has been used as a museum in the past I am not sure if they still do that or not. They also have breast works built and one cannon on the property. It's an interesting place to spend a few hours if you are in the area and looking for...

Is one small problem had no handicap access to which I could drive on but other than that all was well. I got in trouble for driving up to a picnic table so my mother could sit down to eat She cannot walk very well in the grass. Park ranger informed us that we could not park there to Let my disabled mother out. But with some understanding he was still kind. Another thing is I really enjoyed the view it is very beautiful out there Safe for the kids to ...
