This is a beautiful, historical place. There is a quiet reverence to the area. The first time we stopped we were traveling home (north) from the Carolina’s when I just happened to see a sign for the historical battleground; since then, we’ve returned to Summersville twice to visit Carnifex. The views of the valley traveling the short distance through the countryside to reach the battle site are stunning. There is a lovely picnic area and the trail through the woods is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Read moreGood place to go for a hike, family or group picnic. They usually hold a reenactment of the battle I am thinking every other year, with a pretty good turnout. The grounds are very well maintained along with the various trails. They have plenty of parking, a playground area for the kids, a beautiful overlook of the Gauley River. The house that sets on the property has been used as a museum in the past I am not sure if they still do that or not. They also have breast works built and one cannon on the property.
