I stayed here with a group in mid-May 2021 - we rented cabins 8 and 9 for five nights, I stayed in Cabin 9 specifically. We understood the remote, sort of rustic cabin stay we were in for - however, what we arrived to and experienced was unacceptable (even for a sort of rustic experience). The Summersville/River Gorge area isn’t the most welcoming place - we visited some restaurants/stores/etc and often were met with stares and snide comments for wearing masks (we are all healthcare workers). I am not expecting a helpful response back from the owners, as I’ve read through many reviews below and noticed the dismissive attitude they seem to use when responding to mixed reviews, however I felt I should warn others before they book. Shortly after arriving, we found a cockroach in the upper loft area. This was the first of four large cockroaches we encountered in the cabin throughout our stay. Yes, FOUR large cockroaches. There was one almost every day we were there - in the loft, kitchen twice, and living room. As other reviewers have mentioned, it would only take a few things to make this cabin so much better. The quality was lacking everywhere we looked. The cabin felt very surface clean, but as we stayed and used the basic amenities, we were shocked at how dirty and worn the cabin as a whole and kitchen area were. There were cheap, flimsy kitchen utensils/pans that were falling apart and still dirty. The couches were old and worn. The back deck had a tiny rectangular plastic folding table with full size deck chairs around it - you could not comfortably have a meal with 4 people at that table, let alone the 6 people the cabin is supposed to accommodate. There were mildew and mold spots on the ceiling in the bathroom, paint chipping, and stab marks in the door (pictures below). My goodness, at least throw a can of Kilz anti mildew paint on the ceiling in there.. it wouldn’t take much to freshen it up. We were told the hot tubs would not be working and needed to be replaced ahead of time, and they kindly refunded 25% of our stay. We appreciated that, however upon arriving the groundskeeper Dan came up and suggested we just fill em with water and heat em up since they’d be replaced soon anyways. So confusing. I’ve read reviews stating guests were told similar things quite a while ago too - so are the hot tubs actually being fixed/replaced or are they just constantly in a state of disrepair? A very deep clean, fresh coat of paint, visit from an exterminator, and investment in better quality furniture and gear for the cabin would really help this place. We paid well over $1k to rent both cabins for 5 nights - sorry, it was a good deal after splitting the cost among the parties in our group, however my standards are a bit higher than cockroaches and a dirty cabin, even when it’s a good deal. Would not stay again.

VERY DISAPPOINTED!! We have been staying at Carnifex Ferry Cabins for over 20 years, the last time being 2 years ago. With that said, we were fully aware that these were not luxury cabins, simple but always clean and accommodating. Our last visit we noticed the cabins were in need of a little upkeep but still were clean and comfortable. When we arrived at cabin #6 around 4:25, housekeeping was still there and we were told they were running behind. We were understanding and fortunately only had to wait 15 minutes to enter. Upon entering, we realized the sheets that were just placed on the beds were still wet. I had to remove them to dry them myself (once the towels that were still in the dryer were finally dry). Some of the pillowcases also had a weird blue stain on them. I started looking around and found mouse droppings around the fridge and on top of the baseboard heaters (which most of them had the knobs broken off so you couldn’t tell how to work them). I opened the oven to find it disgusting with old food in it…obviously not cleaned at all. I had taken a sheet and placed it on the couch and when we woke up the first morning, it also had mouse droppings all over it. As I was cleaning that I turned to find a literal mouse just hanging out on the rug in the living room that I managed to remove. It was definitely not the only one, the next night we could hear things moving around and woke to find pieces of the bottom of the box spring pulled out into the floor in the room we weren’t staying in. The bed in that room was literally being held up by a piece of firewood! The tv didn’t work for the entirety of our stay. Although they state “a generous supply of firewood” would be available, there was none. We had to go out and purchase firewood. Also the screen on the fireplace was badly broken and could not be closed…fire hazard!!! The hot tub is fairly new but it is on a deck that is leaning horribly where it sits…seemed unsafe. It also had a fair amount of sand or dirt in it. We booked this cabin for our anniversary to just stay in and relax, instead we found ourselves wanting to do anything BUT stay in the cabin. I left a note for the cleaning staff hoping they would at least clean the oven for the next guests. I also reached out to talk to someone about these issues and was promised a call back…3 days later and I have not received a call back or even an email. It is extremely disappointing that repeat guests, such as ourselves, will no longer be visiting due to housekeeping and maintenance neglect.

This place ruined our family vacation!! Not only were the cabins filthy, but the “caretaker” (Dan) was incredibly disrespectful towards my family. Our family rented 4 of the cabins to have a nice family reunion. When my great great aunt/uncle and my grandparents arrived to their cabin at the designated time they were made to wait over 4 hours in the yard with nowhere to go (they drove in from NE Ohio and Tennessee) because the cabin was not ready. They were finally offered to move into a different cabin and handed a key, assuming this would be the cabin they spent their weekend in. They rented cabin 11 and were moved to 10. Keep in mind that this cabin was smaller and cheaper to rent than the one they initially bought, and they were not offered a refund of the difference in price. After spending 1.5 days in this cabin, a group of individuals came up to us and said that this was their cabin and we needed to move. When Dan did speak to my family, he smelled of alcohol. The caretaker then called police and asked my family to leave at 8 at night, some of them having 6+ hour drives and being elderly. We paid to stay in these cabins until Monday and were forced out Saturday night. The caretaker never apologized for his mistake but instead used bully tactics and lied to my family. And I would normally overlook the filth, but we stayed in cabin 3 and the smell of mildew and fish was overwhelming, half the sheets were wet, there was mold in the bathroom, brown stains on some sheets, rodent feces in the drawers, and mystery stains in the carpets. Only 1/2 roll of toilet paper offered for a family of 6 for 4 days! Also there is no phone service and the TV did not work our whole stay. They lost the 30+ paying customers that came with my family forever.

Needless to say after reading other reviews I will not be contact from the owner, Jonathan. I also might add that the phone # left for mngt is missing a digit so once you’re on the property you’re SOL. ||Hello Jonathan, | We left this morning around 10am. The key is on the table. | After our 5 day stay, I'm thinking back about the condition of the cabin. When we first arrived there was high grass with many clover and bees and poison ivy all over the front porch… this was a great disappointment especially due to my son and mother being highly allergic to bees and ivy. When entering the cabin the air freshener that was recently sprayed was overwhelming; once it wore off there was a bad urine smell in the bathroom. Secondly , I know Mother Nature will take its course , but the amount of spider webs and very large wood spiders all over the porch as well as covering the sliding glass door was unacceptable . As a matter of fact, I was carrying a case of water one evening and as i was exiting the sliding door I became covered in a spider web w a large spider that got into my hair. Also, the porch rugs, ashtrays and charcoal grill were filthy . Third , we experienced rodents inside where there was rodent dirt amongst the dishes ,utensils /silverware . Prior to using any of the dishes or utensil's we had to wash them . Forth , we could not shower due to the hot water coming and going .; we had to shower at the campground after boating. We appreciate you sending Sam/maintenance, but he did nothing ( not to mention we had to tell him where the hot water tank was) my husband seems to think the regulator is bad which is why the water would go from hot to cold within seconds . Fifth , the first evening when we did shower , the bath tub fills up while showering and the sewage smell is awful inside and out. Also the same sewage smell is stippling when using the washer. Sixth , the cabin sleeps 6... everything was very clean and comfortable except on the first night when our 28 yr old 185 lb son sat down on one of the twin beds upstairs the box spring folded in half under the mattress. (I alerted you and you didn't reply) Thankfully the day bed was there or he would've been sleeping on a broke bed. Seventh , the front door lock was broke and my husband had to rig to open . (I'm not sure how safe I felt once he was able to open like he did ) Thankfully there was a deadbolt to lock . I alerted you of this as well... no reply . Eighth, the window air Condition unit does NOT cool the cabin and without screens in the windows the temp in there was very uncomfortable. It was 86/88 degrees Sat/Sun. Also, the black mold in the air conditioner unit is very hazardous , thankfully no one got sick . We have a rental cabin in Cook Forest, PA; we understand the importance of making sure our renters are satisfied with their stay. Under these conditions, we would RETURN THEIR PAYMENT IN FULL. It's very difficult to rent when you're not familiar with the area and the last thing we would want would be to ruin one's vacay due to the facility being unacceptably maintained . The cabins look to be "once" beautiful, but unfortunately are lacking upkeep and maintenance . Housekeeping was friendly and also commented what we experienced was unacceptable. | When spending $1085 for 5 days , one would not expect to have to shower at a campground , worry about rodents , (I forgot to mention we kept our dry goods in our car), cleaning a kitchen prior to use and sweating to death and hoping that our personal belongs are safe while we are away ... just to reiterate.|| Finally, I would appreciate a refund; I'm sure you will...
