River Trails Park District — Attraction in Wheeling Township

On 3/12/21 during a Hot Shots Sports program, my 3yo son was discriminated against based on his disability through the denial of opportunity to participate, received unequal benefits compared to his peers, and was not offered another opportunity that was as effective as the opportunity provided for others. This is in direct violation of the ADA Title III regulations and his rights. After the program, I was also approached by the coach in front of the remaining participants and their caregivers for not wearing an appropriate mask. My mask and my son's mask meet the CDC and DPH Illinois guidelines in being properly fitted, have two layers of fabric, breathable material, no vents, and no gaps. I brought these details to the Recreation Supervisor's attention in an email on 3/14/2021 at 9:49 am in hopes that she would address the discrimination. In an email from her on 3/16/21 at 3 pm, I was told she was giving me a full refund and that they "must follow state guidelines." I love this park. There is a huge playground with many different jungle gyms for the kids to play on. The best swing for small toddlers and is a short walk to their forest preserve. An hour on the playground, short walk through the woods and running up and down the sledding hill is a perfect day with my kids. My partner and I went swimming at the beautiful outdoor pool. The only downside is the way they have the lap swimming lanes set up. They want you to swim down in one lane, go under the lane line, and back in another. I have been a swimmer for 30+ years and have never seen this wild setup at any other pool. It makes for a much less comfortable lap swimming experience, especially as it is not clearly explained whether you are expected to swim on the left or right side of the lane, given that it is one-directional swimming.
