Admiralty Head Lighthouse — Attraction in Whidbey Island

​My recent visit to the Admiralty Head Lighthouse was an absolute highlight of my trip to Whidbey Island. Nestled inside Fort Casey State Park, this beautifully preserved lighthouse is a must-see for its incredible views and fascinating history. ​The lighthouse itself is striking—it's not the typical tall, round tower you might picture. Built in 1903, it has a unique Spanish-style architecture that makes it really photogenic. Admission to the lighthouse is free (though you'll need a Discover Pass to park at Fort Casey), and the volunteers inside are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. ​We explored the restored keeper's quarters, which now house a small museum. The exhibits do a great job of explaining the history of the lighthouse and others in the Pacific Northwest. The best part, without a doubt, is the climb to the top. It's a winding staircase followed by a short, steep ladder, but the reward is a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view. From the lantern room, we could see clear across Puget Sound to the Olympic Mountains—it was simply stunning. ​What makes this spot extra special is its location. After touring the lighthouse, we spent another hour exploring the bunkers and "disappearing guns" of Fort Casey right next door. The combination of maritime history and military history, all set against that gorgeous backdrop, makes for a perfect afternoon adventure. ​I'd highly recommend this to anyone visiting the island. First, I must say that Admiralty Head lighthouse is on the grounds of Fort Casey State Park. The lighthouse was built between 1902 and 1903. It was built as a beacon to provide ships coming into Puget Sound with a Light to show ships exactly where the entrance to the sound is. The Light could be seen 17 miles out in the Strait of Juan De Fuca, where the ships were coming from.

The lighthouse has a diorama of Fort Casey State Park. It also has two Fresnel lenses, one of which was like the original lens in the lighthouse. The other lens was one that was at alki Point. The tower to the Lighthouse cap is open as well.
