Today is Sunday April 13th been here since 1:59 p.m. . Very nice location it's different from the other state parks that I'm used to in Georgia. I was looking to pull up and kick my feet back and stare out into the ocean the lake the mud puddles and unwind. But I would have had to walk a distance to find it. But to each his own. My first gripe is going to be at the front desk the older lady with the glasses I asked her did she have any leaflets on the park that I could have and read she acted like my English was foreign. Until I said could I please have a map well you can go this way and go that way no I don't want you to tell me I'm 60 years old. Give me a map please. She wasn't pleased with that she wanted to be my God I don't want you being my God I'm 60 years old I can read right understand and been to college and all of that on the business. Stop trying to use old techniques for people that you don't see on a regular basis. Please go sharpen your your tools. This won't stop me I'll be back I just can't understand it we're all people with human we Believe blood some got a chain to the English and some people got a country today English. My second gripe I paid to get in here $5 I didn't come here to camp I came here to unwind sit in my little car with my air home bother no one. But some person didn't like that so they called the cavalry on me the black woman in her car tending to her business in my car in the cool and chill I'm winding enjoy my space and peace. Why did you call the camera on me cuz someone kissing your ass I'm so sick of people treating black people like we are damn toy. I gave that to God and I took a walking trail a Long trail. Not to vent just two regain my peace inhaler exhale that's what we come here for to enjoy the outdoors taking with mother nature has to offer. So I don't know why the camera got called and when he came this way I gave him a piece of my mind that's it right down the tag number that's what you want to do... I'm not going to do what you say . I follow rules very well I guess I broke a rule for being black and being by myself peaceful quiet not talking to anybody then by myself in my car away from people. Maybe that was the problem. I'll get it one to God! I'm 60 years old and still having to go through b*aren't you'll tired causing confusion and dismay.. I shall return. Have the day you deserve have the...
Read moreCampground: July 2017. Me, hubby, and Mickey, our 6lb Pom. This is our second stay at a GA state park this month (from SC), so we purchased the "Family Membership" for $80.00. That will pay for itself in one weekend visit, not to mention the additional discounts that come with it. This was a last minute trip. We were just going to stay the weekend (I work Monday), but hubby is off through Tuesday, so we purchased an additional night with our new discount, so hubby and Mickey will stay while I slave away at work!
The park is BEAUTIFUL! Our spot, Site #74 in campground #3, is spacious with a good amount of shade. We have PLENTY of space for our pop-up, 4-door jeep, and my car towing 2 kayaks. Very pet friendly, including clean-up stations throughout the park. We arrived after 8pm last night, so I decided to wait until today to take a shower. Woke up to a note on the camper door that a site had a broken water pipe, so all water will be shut off until 4pm. Guess I'll be driving home grungy. Definitely no fault of the park, just life. Good thing I travel with tons of wipes!
The office/gift shop closes at 8pm. When we arrived shortly after 8pm last night, the Ranger that was driving by stopped to see if I needed any help and pointed me in the right direction for after-hours instructions (didn't get her name); very nice and helpful. When we went to register at the office this morning, Rowan and Caitlin were on duty at the desk. They were AWESOME! Very knowledgeable about their services, very helpful, and SUPER nice!!! They also confirmed that all GA state parks are first-come, first-serve (or not site-specific reservations). I don't particularly care for that, but it works to your advantage if someone leaves a day early.
Also, the narrow roads are 2-way roads throughout. Haven't had a problem yet, but it could be for those with bigger rigs than ours. So far, it seems everyone sticks to driving as if they ARE one way, which is probably why we haven't had an issue.
We'll definitely visit again when "I" can...
Read moreI camped at this gorgeous state park during early 2015 and 2016 as I avoided the cold winters up north.
The staff was always friendly and helpful. Compared to many state parks, most of the campsites are large and spread out with water at each site... and some with full hookups and cable TV. Each of the three buildings with restrooms and showers were well-maintained by the campground hosts and included washing machines and dryers. The trails thru the maritime forest are something one could never grow tired of. My dog and I walked those trails daily regardless of the weather. The other campers in the park tended to be a little more upscale as a whole than many other state parks that I, as a full-time camper, have been to around the country and so loud music, hanging laundry, large groups of unruly kids, trashy rigs, and other similar minor annoyances were rarely an issue. Granted, I was there during the winter, which was not the height of the camping season. Still, I suspect that the park's high standards are maintained at all other times of the year. There is WiFi in the immediate area surrounding the main office. Because the campsites are wired for cable, internet access is a luxury that they could easily make available throughout the entire campground... even if it meant charging a small fee for a secure, high speed connection.
The park is within a few minute drive of a couple grocery stores and gas stations and only 15-30 minutes from nearly every kind of store, restaurant, and other type of business that a larger city like Savannah can offer. So, you can camp at a beautiful park that feels far away from civilization yet still be close to anything you might need.
Being from Michigan where our state parks have consistently been ranked at or near the top of all state park systems in the country, I have really been spoiled. Still, Skidaway Island SP is among my very favorite places to camp. In fact, I already made plans to return in early 2017. I can't wait to...
