Okay, I'm going to rate all of Wilson, Kansas on this one and not just the "Egg". For such a small town, I think it would be worth it to come back and explore a little more.
First, you have the Czech Egg and numerous other small eggs throughout the town (much like the Dala Herd in Lindsborg). Second you have historical buildings, such as the main hotel in town, the Midland Railroad Hotel & Restaurant. Others include an old water tower and a refurbished theater? Third, there are a bunch of old painted advertisements on the sides of buildings. So cool!
We were just passing through, but took numerous pictures and plan on returning to this small farming community. Interestingly enough, in all the areas we drove through Kansas, right outside of Wilson is where we saw the only field of sunflowers growing! We thought it was the sunflower state, but I guess we were mistaken!
There us a big Czech festival in town and there were numerous informational kiosks describing various things around town. Definitely worth a stop and to...
Read moreIt's literally a beautifully painted giant egg right in the center on this beautiful, old town. I love everything about this town!! Such a rich history of the immigrant families who came and settled here and worked the land for over over several generations! There's an old water well they turned into a jail (drunk tank) lol. It's amazing and sad at the same time walking thru this town as it's in real time turning into a ghost town. This place is so far from everything and if you don't know it's there, you'd miss it completely. If you're reading this, you need to go and Czech it out lol but seriously, the 5 nice people we saw and spoke to in this town all were elderly and born and raised right here. With younger generations leaving this town behind to try to afford life in today's age, it's worth making the trip while people still actually live here. It's a must see, especially if you're on...
Read moreWilson, Kansas was settled by Czech immigrants originally. While Christianity was persecuted in their homeland the people learned to put Christian messages on their festive decorated eggs. When they came to Kansas they continued creating these beautiful eggs. This one was made by a local artist for the town of Wilson to display. We stopped there for lunch in the downtown diner that featured fresh made potato chips and real soda fountain drinks. The restaurant in the classic limestone hotel was closed because it was Monday, but we really enjoyed the food and service at the diner. Wilson Lake is only 10 miles away with hiking, swimming, boating and fishing. It is a...
